HPI Checks

  1. Seems a bit of a minefield - some look like they cost £2 others £25

Are you covered if the garage says 'HPI checked and clear' or should I pay out and check anyway

This is related to a second hand car purchase rather than bike

  2. In my experience some of the garages HPI's are not that comprehensive unless its a main dealer. £25 mark is about right and make sure your covered by the HPI once the search has been completed.

  3. Don't trust a car dealer............

  4. I think £25 is about right - Andy had one done when he bought the 695. He said the cheaper alternatives didn't offer the same guarantees.

  5. Doesn't that text check one cover enough? I think the number is/was 83600.

  6. interested in why ???

  7. Arthur Daly??

  8. steady on Swiss Toni will be along in a minute and I already have a wrap sheet on here for slagging them off

I am thinking of buying privately but that presents other pitfalls

I know I need to check HIP clear but a pain if you are travelling 200 miles to see a vehicle get there think 'she's the one' then have to do the check only to find out buggeranddarnation -

  9. Can't you check before you go Char?

  10. @ £25 a pop it could get a bit pricy if I want to look at a few cars

  11. Ah I got ya

  12. buying a second hand car, is a bit like making love to a beautiful women...................

  13. its a firkin nightmare think I'll get the bus and put the money towards a KTM

not having a car to go and look at the fekin things isn't much help either

  14. I read somewhere that log book loans don't show up on HPI checks. It can be a big risk these days buying privately

  15. When I was looking at used cars for my Son, I found one at a nearby dealer that looked good, ticked all the boxes etc. Dealer said it was HPI 'clear' and so we did the deal.

I went home to get the cash and just for the peace of mind did an online check only to find out it had been a Cat C write-off.

When I confronted the dealer he told me that he had checked the HPI status and that it had been repaired/tested etc. so in his opinion it was clear!

Now I know a write-off in this case could just be superficial damage and that it may have well been repaired perfectly (looked good to me) but without knowing the extent of the damage I was wary (harder to check yourself on a car than a bike) but the biggest thing was that this was to be my Son's first car on which insurance would be a major expense and (I understand) that the insurance companies charge even more for repaired write-offs?

One man's HPI 'clear' is clearly not the same as another's...

  16. There used to be a lady on visordown who used to do cut price hpi checks. If you are registered there, possibly worth a shout.

  17. I hope you rattled his jaw for him.

  18. Correct. And if the previous owner defaults/ has defaulted and sold it, say goodbye to the vehicle as the loan is secured against the car. Nothing you can do when the bailiff turns up.

  19. I used this mob about 6 weeks ago to check an 11 year old Bonneville, and was very pleased with the results. But, had no texts informing of it's HPI status! I assumed it was clear after 11 years and only 2 owners, and would've bought the bike if I liked it enough, a little too sedate for me tho ....

  20. im very skeptical of HPI checks. many years ago i bought an MR2 Turbo..had it checked, came back clean. Car got stolen, and in the process of the claim it turned out that it was 'owned' by a finance company and there was still £5k owing on it..when i sent the HPI docs in I was duly informed by HPI that the fee was for the check, not the accuracy of the results!! wtf??
Things may have changed since then, but tread carefully with all of these companies.
