higher quote or lower excess?

  1. Hello,
Just trying to get my insurance for my evo and it's a choice of
MCE £230 excess £550 (breakdown cover)
wicked quotes £294 excess £350 (other bikes, abroad)

Which is better, more money or less excess? I don't need any of the extras though I guess other bikes is about as useful as any if I need to ride somebody's bike home (never done yet).

I'm going down the lines of I wouldn't want to lose 3 years ncb for a small amount so it'd be a write off or major crash and possibly the excess would just not make that much difference?

Or has anyone tried anyone http://www.bike-excess.com?

  2. you doing it online or over the phone, ive been with MCe for 6 years, and mostly get the insurance while I am at the Excell bike show, is your insurance 12 or 15 months? as the were doing 3 months free, call them and have a chat, but like you say watch their excess

  3. I ring MCE, are you doing 15 for 12.
Yes we are. Have you received a quote already online from us at a comparison site
    Yes
Sorry, you can't have 15 months
Erm, ok then fuck you I'm going somewhere else

  4. ring back and say you haven't plead ignorance........ or argue that there offer doesn't stipulate online or phone, don't it make your blood boil, forgot to say if you go to a SB round and they're there doin quotes they always do a show deal, or at NEC or excel as I said

  5. When you hunt around online you can see they all just use the same two or three systems so in reality there's no difference other than the amount of money they want for you using their site.

Out of all the comparison sites that use the same systems I found MCN take the smallest cut, and therefore the better price.

Tried carol nash and she's just far too greedy compared to the other companies that share that same insurance system.

I thought about protecting my no claims and at carol nash the price went up from £420 to £1200 ;)

I think I'll go with the lower price and higher excess as losing ncb is not worth it unless the repairs are in the thousands and then a £150 isn't much.

  6. Pay attention to recovery as many are 10 miles and then you pay per mile ....

  7. I have full home breakdown with my bank. Anyway I took it with MCE as they added pillion, other bike and protected no claims for 270.

    But how stupid is this:
    - You say you've garaged your bike. If it's stolen while on your property but not garaged it may double the excess or the insurer may not pay out

+ you said OR, can you tell me the rules for that as not paying is quite a big thing

    - they may or may no pay out depending on the circumstances

+ what circumstances I'd like to know when they'll double and when they'll not cover me

    - hang on. waits a few minutes

    - say your bike is stolen on your drive then you may not be covered

+ you said may, can you tell me the rules for when i am or not

    - hang on.... say your bike is stolen while you're washing it, it might not be covered

+ ok, I give up getting an answer. are you telling me that if I'm washing my bike on the drive, go for a coffee and somebody wheels it away the insurer might void my insurance, but if I wheel the bike 1 foot further forward onto the path outside my house to clean it then I'm covered?

    - yes.

  8. i have no personal experience, but there is an apparent insurance 'insider' on pistonheads, who is consistentlynot a fan of MCE, to put it mildly. have a look in Biker banter for insurance threads, if you want to have a read.

there appear to also be 'users' of MCE who have encountered difficulties when it comes to the 'claim' stage of insurance. heavan forbid anyone getting to that bit, but its the acid test....

  9. What bank you are with? As far as I know both Natwest and Barclays offer only 10 miles brake down recovery. Frankly most offer that when it is "free"

  10. No such thing as free..............just divide the cost by 15 instead of 12.....

  11. true Andy, but it was still cheaper than Hastings Nash etc.......and they were a 12month policy, having IAM advanced and belonging to a bike club does help.

Anyhow Chuclepie, what is the scenario if you decide to wash your bike while at a mates house and it gets stolen off the drive, or the event that a engine falls off one of sir Ricjard Bransons jets and hits you.......... you never know would that still be your fault

  12. i would penalise you for "washing" your bike............water shouldnt go anywhere near it.......

  13. I agree yet still pressure washer is my friend in winter ....

  14. It's a Barclays Extra account, I've already had them out for my car in the drive :)

Funny enough I read a thread here earlier from somebody saying they had pillion then turns out they didn't. Well the woman said I had pillion on the phone then when I checked the document that just arrived it said no pillion. Maybe they're trained to say that. But I'm not that bothered as I never take passengers anyway.
