Cleaning

  1. How do you get the combined chain lube/crud/oil/etc flung up onto the body work?

Tried washing off but just smeared the gunge everywhere.

Need some sort of oil remover that wont also damage the finish - any recommendations?

    Cheers

  2. I use Motul wash n wax as my 'do everything' cleaner in the workshop. Clears chain lube no problem and finishes all in one.

  3. I use a dab of paraffin on a rag/brush.Then wash with soap.......I also use it on the bike.

  4. Someone may be along to scream at me for this, but I use baby wipes. Chain lube/grease/bug splatters, takes it all off pretty well. I just make sure I have a damp chamois or soft cloth to hand as the baby wipes are a bit smeary/streaky if you let it dry.

Does make me wonder about how they can be ok for use on a babys arse though if they do that to clean stuff off a bike, but hey ho.

  5. WD 40, good for cleaning, crap for lubricating.

  6. Cheers guys....

Matt - have you seen what comes out of a baby's back side?!?

  7. I've not had much experience of that yet and from what friends have said that doesn't sound like a bad thing!

  8. One word to describe it- horrendous! That is all.

  9. Agreed....50% light oil...50% thinners

  10. Some young parents once showed me.......looked like stinky pea soup.....

  11. While cleaning my 998S I saw my better half (aka the Ducati Widow) watching me from kitchen window.
So after applying the last admiring wipe of the wax I lent over and kissed the fairing....I thought it was funny....apparently not.

  13. The wretched stuff sticks like toffee on everything!!!
    Wire wool works well ;-)

  14. GT 85 has always worked for me. I also agree with the baby wipes they are good for light marks on tank and paintwork etc.

  15. Never used wire wool on our babies:eek:

  16. Mr Sheen is also good for cleaning, especially muck on swingarm and wheel rims.

  17. like everyone else has said, ive found in my OCD cleaning fetish that GT85 works marginally better than WD40 (which is still good), as is el cheapo Wilko's knock off version of WD40...i apply it though with an old towel torn into little pads so that i dont scratch the paint rather than a gritty old cloth of some sort..
I also use some sprayed into said towel pads to clean excess chain lube from the chain..i get virtually no fling onto the rear wheel.

this is the normal state of the chain, but i am anal.....(ask my ex):

  18. You missed a bit ;-)

  19. I doubt any of my bikes have ever been that clean! How many hours and how much product did that take?

  20. Petrol or parrafin. I normally keep some in a can for cleaning my chain. Failing that gunk works okay too but i dont use that on my chain. I dont mind a bit of fling.

Hmm internal bracing on your 5 spokes eh. I dont have those on my mags. Plus thats insanely bereft of dirt.
