This is my though too. Reading the various (admittedly early) reviews it seems that the electronics quash a lot of the fun, excitement and 'danger'. That's the whole point of a super-naked isn't it? Well, it is for me. That's the reason I bought the 1098 SF. .. I know you can turn off all the electronics so there is that but still.
This is actually quite a good review, ok English isn't his first language but he speaks it better than I do German then this one shows the race version which I believe is simply the Akra kit and some slicks with some suspension tweaks, Akra sounds lovely.... Oh god does it sound lovely, I miss my RC8 and Akra
IMO Ktm have drawn a line in the sand, Ducati have been given a serious 'heads up' here so lets just hope this new monster delivers
My order is in and I'll have time to see what response Ducati make before I take the bike. I don't want a Monster, I want a Streetfighter with a Panigale engine ! I can't see Ducati have that in the pipeline any time soon.
Know we spoke about this earlier in the thread but yes, I'm right with you; A streetfighter with the Panigale engine would be just the ticket but they didn't sell enough 1098SF's so unlikely to happen. This new Monster will be a really good road bike I'm sure but I like the fact that my 1098SF scares me and I want more of that with a large naked. Who knows - Maybe the new Monster is akin to the S4R and has some real nuts. Or just maybe the days of scary super nakeds are gone and its the age of electronic safety devices taming and quashing silly behaviors exhibited by the old Duke, the SF, Speed Trip etc.
I'd be gobsmacked if the new monster wasn't kicking out 160bhp or there abouts, possibly a tad more. i can't see a reason for them to bother launching it unless they're going head to head with Aprilia Tuono V4's and the Superduke. That 1200 Ducati engine must have a fair few ponies left in the tank from the Diavel and Multi and it's been a while since we've had a 'monster' monster from Ducati, maybe this will be a return to form. either way if not both the superduke and aprilia are both superb options, the later I've experienced and can say it WILL scare you if that's what you want, it's quick for a naked on a whole new level, I'm sure the SD will do exactly the same. im most excited about the physical size of the new monster spy shots, from what I've read it stands much bigger than existing monsters which for me being a tall bloke is exactly what I want. id like to point out if it wasn't for the £14k price tag I'd be looking at the KTM, it's just a tad too rich for me and having owned two lots of RC8/RC8r's in the past I've been burnt before on the depreciation but it may well not happen with this new model.
I heard (but only from my dealer) that the new Monster was kicking out 155bhp but its all twiddly figures end of the day. As a previous owner of a Monster 1100 and a 1098SF I'd also be interested in the size. I found the previous big monsters a little cramped, not a lot but a little too short between peg and seat, so a larger bike would be good. I'm 6'2".
The streetfighters are a much better fit aren't they, when I sat on the 1100 monster it was laughable how small it was. bring back man sized bikes i say, sportsbikes I can understand because of aero dynamics but on a naked it doesn't matter so I'd rather have a bigger comfier ride with shit loads of torque
Now I'm not for one minute suggesting your not anything other than a brilliant rider with better than average throttle control Etc. but I doubt you or any of us for that matter could get anywhere near even 8/10ths of this bikes ability without the electronics switched off which is why they exist of course if you can then you could always turn them off.....and good luck with that one
This wound me up when Adam child wrote the review for mcn he slated the bike because of the electronics and you need a £60 dongle to keep the electronics on your last settings. Doesn't seem worth complaining about as any dealer will throw this in for free on a £14k bike if you ask nicely
didn't they rate the 848 street fighter more than the bigger version? not sure you need the balls out power of the KTM, I would lay good money that you haven't been able to MAX out the 848S/f and if so fair play
Having seen the new M1200 I'm starting to quite like it after being down on it. I could see myself on a white M1200R.
The naked class is looking good for next year, I'm not sure about the new monster, it will be a shame if we lose the big streetfighter as I like the aggressive look and the new monster looks a bit soft if you know what I mean. Looking forward to seeing some group tests with the superduke, monster, naked s1000 and new z1000.
A nice write up full of information in the new issue of Motorcycle Sport and Leisure on the new Super Duke. I find this magazines bike tests far more useful than a lot of other magazines, they seem to have a more mature approach to their testing and reporting, not at all boring and usually interesting and well informed.
Both PB and Bike tests reckon that the new 1290 SuperDuke is a lot more sensible than the bonkers 990. That's me out then
Looked at the KTM at the NEC today. I reckon its £4k over priced when compared to the S1000RR naked. Not overly impressed with it in the flesh. Prefer the new Monster and the Speed Triple R.
