Skyhook - What's the verdict?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by freshage, Oct 29, 2013.

  1. Personally i don't think anyone riding solo will find much wrong with the standard ABS bike, the suspension on that is very very good.

You could possibly get a 2013 std bike for the same money as a 2012 Ohlins equipped bike especially if you add in all the extras you are looking at Freshage. And then you would get the better twin spark motor, led headlights and far superior wind protection on a 2013 model so it wouldn't need any money spending on it.

  2. Skyhook aside then, is the suspension any good compared to Ohlins for feel? I loved the Ohlins on my 1098S.

  3. Yes it is. Supple but plenty of feel. Don't get taken in by the Ohlins name. In fact the Ohlins suspension has proven to be one of the weaker points of the earlier bikes in terms of reliability.

  4. You're spot on by the Ohlins name, it's got that 'bling' factor there. The seals on my 1098S went after 500 miles of owning the thing haha. I'm just trying to work out what model offers what at what price. I don't want to get a 2010 model.

  5. The model is going to be the same regardless of year, Multistrada 1200S Touring.

    2011 average price second hand - £10,500

    2012 average price second hand - £13,000

    2013 average price second hand - £15,000

Brand new 2013 is £15,550 from Moto rapido.

My figures are taken off a VERY quick skim over Auto trader from only a hand full of results. But to me. It seems 2011 might be the best bet, as it leaves me with a nice lot of money to sort out niggles that were lingering in that model, such as the screen, fueling etc. And I can still get my kit I need plus a new shiny exhaust system.

Unless, the 2013 can be haggled to include a full exhaust system for the same price, I don't think it will be worth it. Does the duel ignition system really smooth out as good as a refueling by Chris at CJS? Is the screen really that much of a benefit over modified screens on the older revisions? Is the Skyhook something I will thank every day on my commutes or weekend runs to Wales with a pillion and luggage?

I'm a tight person by nature so like to make sure I get the best for my buck haha

  6. If you're trying to be wise with money, buy a 2010/2011 ABS model with Touring bits, save yourself a bucketload of cash and avoid a large amount of headaches. Something like mine, except I'm not selling.
Or go the whole hog and get a Skyhook'd model. The Ohlins has already proved itself to be troublesome and I don't see the new semi-active ECU making matters better.

  7. hi freshage, bottom line here is 'Skyhook'!!!! It's brilliant. I have owned 2010 base model 2012 ohlins and now have a new GT model. Let's not forget when changing modes the throttle and other perameters are also changing to suit rideability. The sachs skyhook is intelligent, two up riding is huge difference as reported by my partner, it basically irons out the ride significantly, lets face it our british roads are in an appauling mess. This is another reason to choose skyhook. As for re-sale you won't buy a skyhook version cheap so it's an investment with a return.I could go on!cheers vince

  8. oh forgot to mention the twin spark!....e.g. I commute, coming home today gently on the throttle in 5th at 2000rpm 40 mph and the bike pulls clean glitch free!........Having had the other models there is absolutely no way the old engine would perform like that! The bike would be bucking and surging at anything below 3000rpm in 3rd gear let alone 5th!
ITS amazing to think they have manage to get 1200 twin so smooth! vj

  9. But, is it really worth the extra buck? As it will put me out of an exhaust system, new kit and lid for a bit...

Seeing as you've owned 2010, 12 and now the new one, off the top of your mind, what are the biggest differences to you? What can you say the money is worth it for? What are the main differences to you?

  10. Did you have them remapped by Chris though, or factory mapping only?

  11. How much is the mapping by Chris?

  12. No idea on current prices, was £400 or thereabouts when I had mine done but that was a fair while back.

  13. Noticeable difference?

  14. hell yeah...well was on my 848 and the guys I net on that multi run raved about the difference. But with dual spark on 2013 model many of the low down issues seem to have been sorted, but Chris returns a few more ponies ;-)

I'm going to get mine done ready for next year...

If you did this and added the Ohlins SCU upgrade I reckon you've have 90+% of the new bike for a lot less than the new money

  16. preferred skyfall

  17. Absolutely. Nice and smooth, stopped it lurching and stuttering at low revs (very important with a daily commute into Oxford town centre), and went a long way to curing it's drink habit. Lifted the power to 157hp at the rear wheel too, but headline figures were never the aim, it was all about delivery and behaviour.

  18. 157 is impressive. Must be putting at ~170 at the crank. Didn't think a 11 degree valve configuration could push that far and be reliable.

That's me! Had the CJS done a while ago, showing 159 bhp at the rear wheel ,fitted the Ohlins SCU upgrade too, last ride out a few weeks ago with my pal who has 2013 Pike Peak we swopped over, and I much preferred my ride.Thought it must be the familiarity thing... until he said he preferred my bike too!!

  20. Hey freshage, mines a 2011 and I've never had any fueling problems. vj60 just had a bad experience with his old bike(s). Mine will pull cleanly on a gentle throttle from as low as 2000 rpm.

The early build ones had the fueling issues and were pretty much cured with an updated map at the dealers although some problems sometimes persisted.

Of course a test ride before purchase will reassure you.
