I looked forward to my commute today as per normal, what I didn't enjoy was seeing the dreaded Ice symbol on the dash 3c and below! My question is what gloves are all the commuters wearing? I wear dainese gortex clothing all textile stuff..Gator jacket, trousers, boots and gloves! Problem is and it's the only problem is my hands suffer from the cold the rest of me is fine. Heated grips set to 3 (full) makes little difference. The Multi has lever guards which should in theory help but do little to keep hands warm. At low speeds palms are warm but outside of my hands are cold. I've worn silk under gloves and outer mits but these make the controls hard to use! I've considered those large outer mits which fix semi permanently to the bars but they look awful and I'm unsure if they will fit over the lever guards which coincidently house the indicators, which makes this idea a non starter! Any suggestions?
You could opt for heated gloves ? That way you don't have the bulk of a fully lined glove but get the all round hand warmth your after. Definitely a gap in the market for convection heated gloves designed to be used in conjunction with heated grips. As an aside, I have those Dainese Fulcrum GTX's and they are simply the best touring boots I have ever owned. It's like riding/walking in your favorite slippers, with the added benefit you can walk in them off the bike without squeaking (Sidi), or people thinking your wearing leg braces. [h=1][/h]
....yeah I agree the Fulcrum's are truly amazing comfortable and warm, walk in them all day. Just my gloves to sort out now! Do you now if there are any better dainese gloves on the market? vj
I used to have a really cheap pair of short Winter gloves, they were great in the cold, reasonable feel, not too thick but not really waterproof at all. I looked at getting some heated gloves the other day. I tried some on but got annoyed with the way the wire flops around. I can imagine it would get annoying when you ride and get tangled at some point. Maybe we'll get a review some someone who has used them to see how they got on.
I use Gerbing heated gloves when it's cold, keeps my hands warm all over when used with the heated grips
Don't the cables go up the inner sleeve of the jacket ? What about these double inners gloves that are around these days. You put your hand into one of two sections. For summer you slot your hand in underneath the lining so its all at the back of the hand, and it gives you better feel for the grips. In winter you slot you hand into the inner glove. I wonder if you could use the summer configuration for winter heated handgrip riding. As you will have a thin layer at your palm for the heated grips and the unused inner glove on the back of your hand for insulation.
I used the Keis heated glove liners in a pair of winter gloves and they worked very well, even down in to the minus'. I also used one of their body warmers so you can wire the gloves to that and run the wires down the sleeves. Works quite well. I also tried a pair of the two fingered gloves, Richa I think. These on there own were quite good, but when worn with my heated inners burnt the side of one of my fingers. Never did this in normal gloves, just the two fingered things. After that I splashed the cash and brought a pair of Gerbing heated gloves. Nice and warm, just quite expensive. Also the connectors are different so I now have two lots of wires.
I find the Ducati Heated grips are good BUT the gap in the handle bar shield inboard of the levers made my thumbs go cold. The winter fix is to cut a thick piece of rubber and blank off the hole on the handlebar / indicator shields. Hold the piece of rubber in place with black Duct tape and now no more cold thumbs or cold hands. I still use general purpose gloves as they give the best feeling on the bars and the heated grips now warm all my hand and no more frozen thumbs.

I use Racer Multitop gloves (not heated) and they work really well with the heated grips. I can't have them on the highest setting for long as they get too hot. The gloves are not thick winter gloves but are waterproof and have thin insulation, they let the heat through just like summer unlined gloves. The inserts are cut to shape out of 2mm thick black rubber sheet (cant remember where it came from - was laying around in the workshop!), They need to be cut to shape for each side and be larger than the holes so they don't drop through. Held in place with Black Duct Tape - the real stuff not cheap Wilko tape. Practical not pretty. Keeps my thumbs out of the cold air and I only have them fitted for the winter months.
What is the brand of that spoiler you have on the screen Veetwin? I would appreciate a report on its benefits when fitted on the standard 2013 screen.
Have a look at the "Lets talk 2013 Touring, Pikes Peak and Touring GT screens" thread on here. Its a BMW accessory for GS's called a "Wunderlich Screen deflector". It is normally swivelled up but had just cleaned the bike and had not tilted it up - its just one screw to move it up and tighten it into position. Works for me!
Icy thanks veetwin I closed the holes last night and used the bike today in freezing conditions and yes it makes a difference, just wish there was a proper fix for it!
