....a hypermotard! Well, not much of a surprise since I'm posting in this forum! Haven't bought one yet, I'll be buying second hand. Just wondering if anyone has and advice on what to look for, any years to avoid, or anything you wish you knew when you bought yours. Looking for an 1100. Have been driving a 1200GSA for a few years now, so used to almost 600km tank range. Looks like I won't have that luxury any more
Forget it! What you really need is one of the latest semi active suspension water cooled GSs. You'll even get up to 270 miles from the tank (I know from personal experience when I had one for Euro touring during 2013). Anyway, I think you mis-typed the title of your thread...it maybe should have said '...a huge bit less practical'!
I forgot to mention, I'm buying second hand. So I won't be buying the latest BMW anything! Practality isn't a priority, I don't tour anymore, just want it for the odd commute and something to go for a short drive on. It's either the hyper or a monster. Prefer almost everything about the hyper except for the tank range. In an ideal world I'd have 2 bikes, but not a hope I can afford that.
HM69_Tank: CA Cycleworks 22 lt.(4.9 gal) Fuel Tank, Ducati Hypermotard I can't afford one (i don't really need one either) but it is an option.
I went for the 796 hypermotard for commuting and the occasional blast round the country lanes and love it!! i rode an 1100 found it a bit much to be honest, i got my 796 remapped and full system fitted and its amazing to ride with the wet clutch.
Cool, nice to know there is an option out there. I reckon get the bike and see how it goes. Maybe in a year if I'm sick of going into petrol stations, I'll invest. To be honest, I reckon if I had that money I'd put it towards a termi system, or some sort of aftermarket exhaust. I'll just do the odd dry commute. The 796 is probably more useful, but if I'm going to get a completely impractable bike just for fun, I might as well go the whole hog and get the 1100!
I used to have a GS - gutless and heavy spring to mind. Agreed the hyper may not be as practical but you could always fit the long range tank and slap a wind shield on for touring. Sure you'll get a sore ass after a while but that's a small price to pay for the fun you'll have on a hyper. Plus you won't look like a GS riding ****
If you're buying second hand try and find an 1100 with the extended range tank already fitted. Range will be 200+ miles. Its the best mod for the Hyper as otherwise you spend too much time on garage forecourts. You'll love the Hyper!
Clearly you had an old type GS. The latest one would blow your socks off. I agree the GS is over the top for urban type use, as is the Multi and all other big adventure type bikes. When I quit euro touring at the end of this year I swopped for a Diavel.
A Hyper will certainly be a lot of fun, I reckon you'll enjoy it. You'll have to get used to acknowledging other motorcyclists again tho' . Best of luck finding the bike you want.
Thanks for the replies, I reckon my mind is made up at this stage and it's the hyper over the monster. I won't be seriously looking till I sell the GS. One more question: I'm located in Ireland, but reckon I'll be travelling to England to pick one up. Market in ireland is small, and you might have to wait 6 months for a nice hyper to come on the market. A few of my mates have bought cars in England, (classic cars). They said, in their experience and from what they heard, the price advertised is the price pretty much you have to pay in a second hand private sale. Is there not much room for bargaining? Or is it just because if you travelled all the way from Ireland they know you're not going to leave without the car/bike?
I wouldn't buy anything without a discount!! try to knock them down before you travel. If you turn up from Ireland with a trailer they prob won't budge much. As a minimum make sure they know you're going to see a few while your over so they don't think they got you over a barrel. I've got a 796 and I love it. Didn't get 1100 because this is enough for me. I'm trying to slow down a little after years of blasting 4 cyl sports bikes and I got to say this naked thing is great fun up to 90 ish but i'm keeping the high numbers down.
Well, I was going to fly over and get the ferry back, so won't be bringing a trailer. But yeah, I'll do my haggling on the phone first. Cheers for the advice lads, hopefully I'll be back here soon as a hyper owner
I'm not dave! But if Dave has a 1200GSA and is thinking of getting a hyper, tell him to just grow some balls and go out and do it!
Freind of mine had his socks blown off alright , he has a 13 plate bmw 1200 gs washed the wheels with that mucoff stuff (which is supposed to be very alloy freindly ) and they have diss coloured badly .....took it to dealer they say shouldnt of used it no warranty issue (even though on his previous bmw there was no problem using it on those wheels ?? He went on a tour this year in France and whilst doing bout 75mph on the road crossed lanes over the cats eyes in the road and it got into a massive tank slapper on it .his mate who witnessed it riding behind said he couldnt believe how he managed to stay on it. He told the dealer bout it who say he must of been doing something wrong .........even though its known the the latest gs1200 are having steering dampers fitted to them now , we have all heard about Kevin Ash and his unfortunate passing on the same bike ........something to bear in mind . Oh yes its now in the dealers with engine water loss .........suspected head gaskets For a £13 k bike they certainly have there issues
