not sure if its me, or ambient temperature changes, but I am sure my factory fitted grips, are never the same each time I ride, I've been using the same gloves all week, and have noticed one minute toasty, next minute brrrr, the symbol on the circular display pops up to say they're on, has anyone else had any niggles
Yes, my heated grips were a bit variable in output, I think they were like that since new. They failed recently and have been replaced under warranty and I haven't ridden the bike much since. Note factory fit heated grips are different to dealer fit versions.
Had to have my Factory heated grips replaced on my 2013 Multi, they would sometimes work and then the LH one failed completely and then they both did, so replacements done under warranty. No problems since the replacement. So far that is the ONLY warranty work that has been done on the bike! Makes a nice change from the 2010 model I had
As i understand it, they are never on all the time. They continuously switch themselves on and off to prevent overheating.
which would explain why the Heated Grips sign comes on the display occasionally when riding with them on - I've often wondered if they turn themselves on and off as a way of regulating the temperature and now I'm assuming the symbol being displayed is just a notification that they have turned on again.
The symbol being displayed every few minutes is to remind you that they're on. If they only heated while the symbol was on they wouldn't get hot at all. I would imagine that the different heat levels are achieved by altering the on/off duty cycle with 3 being on all the time, 2 being 60/40 on/off and 1 being 40/60 on/of, or something like that. The on/off frequency is probably several times a second.
My heated Grips packed up after 6 months, replaced under warrenty, just as well as getting frosty inj the mornings
Also, your regulator (alternator) may be faulty, in my case that's what it was, if the regulator is not giving out enough charge, one of the first things that stops getting juice are the heated grips. your dealer has the equipment to properly test the circuit and see if it is working and its constant. In my case it took around 2-3 months until the battery started giving out and it was difficult to start, but I remembered the grips stopped working properly first. bugs
Easy to check if the regulator is on the way out, just set the LCD display to read battery volts and make sure that it reads between 13.6V and 14.6V at a fast idle or higher.
