The deep is worth a visit as is the Number bridge. Keep going north after you visit and stay in York or Beverley, lots of beautiful places around Hull but best to stay out of the city.
I have to say that there are a lot worse places than Hull, as mentioned the town centre is ok and there are some nice buildings the Guild Hall,City Hall, maritime museum, Wilberforce House etc, however some of the people spoil it. Some of the occupants of the large council estates and the influx of Eastern European guests doesn't help. At least the house prices are cheap. anything that they can do to encourage investment is welcome.
Being born and bred in Hull and lived there for the first 35 years of my life (only moved due to wife's job) I can say yes Hull in certain areas is a total shit hole, no argument. But it's no worse that any city i've visited. One of the issues is that it's been held back by a corrupt council for many years and therefore there has been no cohearant plan to regenerate the city. There has been a lot of talk that Siemens will build a huge plant on the docks for wind turbine contruction creating a lot of badly needed jobs and should start an influx of investment in the city. Unfortunately the council has been so busy trying to fill their pockets the whole thing is now more than likely going to Grimsby. As for Hull being at the bottom of every league table published, that's due to all the nice places in Hull don't count as being in Hull since some dick changed the boundries of the city back in the 80/90's.

Larkin's poetry seems to sum up Hull - a tedious ugly municipal place where life is pointless and nothing ever happens. Of course, that could have just been Larkin - after all, no one made him live there. Not been to Hull really - haven't yet been told of a reason to. As nice as anywhere? So, as nice as York, Bath, Cambridge? Really? Or as nice as Peterborough, Bracknell and Birkenhead?
