I was expecting a real , beautifuliy styled retro cafe racer . A sort of German take on the Ducati Sport Classic. A real retro that looked 'classic' but performed almost as well as a modern bike (sorry Triumph - the Thruxton is way underpowered - and more sorry for Moto Guzzi, your V7 is even less powerful - and both have very mild suspensions and brakes - sort of soft retros compared to the lamented SC). Also the NineT looks similar to some BMW nakeds of the very recent past - sit up and beg bars? Where was the styling exercise version I thought was coming? I won't be trading my SC in for it any time soon!
I like the look of it , NEC Friday so much to look at including the Beemer ! Not sure if I will go for bike no. 4 or part ex the speed triple ? Hey ho all part of biking fun
Interesting move by BMW. 110bhp, 18 litre (metal) tank, 4-piston radial brakes & a number of options for the location of the 'official' Akrapovic silencer. Wonder if they've missed a trick by not (yet) offering a sports style cockpit fairing a la R90S? With an OTR price of £11,600 it will be interesting to see if this helps to maintain the upwards trajectory of Sports Classic prices. For those wanting the same engine in a practical bike, the R1200R is still available for around £1,600 less. It will be interesting to see how BMW price the forthcoming R1200R with the new partially water-cooled engine.
I quite like the look of the NineT.I had a sport classic, and it was my favourite bike till It became to painful on my body to ride it. The BMW looks like it might suit me-or even the new monster might be good.
Mervyn, did you have a Sport Classic 1000S or a Paul Smart? I have the GT1000 & I find it very comfortable, more so than the Monster 695 I had before the GT. Found some links for the Nine T: nineT BMW Motorrad UK. BMW Motorrad UK. New Motorcycles. Urban. BMW R 1200 R 2011 Prices & specifications. BMW Motorrad UK.
They were probably busy taking the fairing off the S1000RR: BMW Motorrad UK. BMW Motorrad International Looks like they managed to put adjustable forks on the S1000R.
I actually quite like the look of the Nine-T, but wait to see it in the flesh...... Perhaps it will only be around for three years, not sell very well, be ahead of it's time in terms of style, sell in few numbers, BMW will stop selling it and then everyone will appreciate what a fantastic looking bike it was and then the prices go sky high and become a good investment !!! I've had three SC's, inc PS and just can't stop admiring their design, I love them. Although they still kill me to ride I'm keeping hold of the one I've got........that's a promise to myself.
Hi Rudolph.I had the Sport Classic S for fun,I also had the GT 1000 Tourer for when I did trips to Europe.I also had/have the MH900E.Riding the Sport became to painful so I sold it.Suprisingly the MH is more comfortable than the Sport, but still a bitch at slow speed or any distance.I wish I hadn't sold the GT1000-I replaced it with an SF848 which is a good riding position for me,although I am thinking of having the handlebar raised a little. Thanks for the BMW links I will give them a look.I have put myself on the BMW list to be informed when the NineT can be viewed locally.
Good luck to them, but I do think £11,600 is a lot of money for what the Nine T is. There are rumours the S1000R will sell for below £10,000. With an alleged 160bhp it looks like they have positioned the S1000R to compete with bikes such as the Aprilia Tuono V4 & the KTM SuperDuke. Perhaps they feel they can ask so much for the Nine T because there aren't many retros with around 100-110bhp? I'll be keeping the GT1000 for a while yet.
The GT1000 is a really nice bike. Lovely smooth throttle action, and a comfortable riding position. I was out on mine today & managed to have fun even though it was quite cold & the roads were greasy in places. It's an easy bike to ride, and I find it provides quite a lot of confidence when the road surface isn't perfect. Keep us posted Mervyn, & do let us know how you think the Nine T compares with the SC if you take a test ride.
I've had a few, but not ridden a Beemer for a number of years. My old R80 was a good bike in all conditions, but lacked power until the higher comp pistons & 38mm Dellorto carbs were fitted. R1100S was a good bike. I'd like to see them bring the R1200S back.
