I trying get another cases i had a call with a guy who bringt me this engine from italy and he told me that he will try to ask the dealer if its possible to get from them only cracnkcase becasue the engine which i bought from them was a big piece of shit. We will se what will happen if i will not find till end of the year cases then the only solution can be the welding. but again i am not doing it because i think its a good solution i doing id because as i sad i dont want to invest another 1000euros into this bike.
Yes Phill i also had this idea but in this condition its impossible anyway these bikes in my country are much cheaper like for example UK or DE, and also if the cranckase will be repaired(welded) then i dont want to sale for nobody like that. If anybody need bearing numbers or alternative suppliers just let me know. at evening i post the picture how looks my bearing.
I'd have to agree with not welding the cases I think it's too risky. It costs a lot to just buy engine parts for these motors so why risk all the cost of mechanicals and gaskets to have it potentially blow again. I would personally feel I was cutting corners doing that and it would not make me feel safe if I was using it on track, you could say, potentially, what cost your life!!!
I just came home yesterday at midnight after 10 hours of assembly work on my 999S engine. It trashed the main bearings AND bearing sleeves AND cracked the casing mid-season '13 on the track and I got some help from a friend who knows how to mount new crackshaft bearings correctly and how to shim and assemble the engine block. I bought a set of used casings with bearings from a low mileage 999S and we assembled the engine, checked valves, installed new belts and he did the dark-witchdoctor-thing with crank angle measurings and valve-timing adjustments to optimise the engine for racing. I have to admit that I'm getting a bit tired (both fysically, mentally and financially!) of the triple-9 if this is what I can expect racing Duc's. I have seen quite a few blown-up Ducati engines lately, another guy bought a renovated 1098, put it into his 999 and raced for less than two days when it blew up. It is really a question of WHY you are racing/riding Duc's. If you do it because you love the looks, the sounds and being part of the Duc community you have chosen the right bike but if you see the bike as a tool to reach your laptime goals as cheaply and efficiently as possible you just need the right tool for the job. br Jim
I am sure that 90% of Ducati owners not owning the Ducs because they are the most trustfull bikes in the world. As i sad this is my first ducati and i need to say i love it even if i had in very short time problems whit her. I not using the bike only for track days i using it also for a normal ride and yes i always liked to be a member of Ducati owners its infect me in Itlay when we was on a holiday and on that time was there a Ducati days(it was incredible). The only problem is that as JIM sad i strating to be tired especialy financially But if anybody will hear of cranckase for a good price please post me.
To put a slightly different spin on this, and I fully understand what has been written above as my 748R ran a main bearing on track with only 5,000 miles on it overall. I met some who bought a 1098 when they were new and did 40 trackdays on it abroad in Europe and covered close on 10,000 miles on it, so some of them can hold together. I am sure some of it depends on who built the engine in the factory, everyone I am sure has heard of those dreaded Friday bikes, especially of old. For me it's the cost of the parts, the gasket sets are silly money. Finally I believe that in World Superbikes when 999's were racing they actually changed the engines after practice and put a new one on for the race to make sure they remained reliable. They are clearly not high mileage bikes and 998's\999's do have this bearing problem, the worst part being that the cases always seem to suffer.
True, the cost of parts is insane - the two main bearings alone cost 400 Euro if I order from my local Ducati Stealer Two belts are 130 Euro and I could go on. If you can find a decent used engine it will often be cheaper than doing engine work. I updated my Flickr 999S renovation set with engine pics from yesterday for your entertainment/amusement: http://www.flickr.com/photos/98417949@N06/11064573074/in/set-72157634962493571/ Jim
Jim, nice pictures i would upload mine pictures as well but at the moment i not registered on flickr.com or somewhere else where i can do this kind of things. Engine look nice hopefully will not have kind issues like mine. I wish you lot of miles whitout any problem. Friday i will get the new bearings and i will wait maybe i can find on ebay or somewhere crancase whitout cracks.
An cheaper option is to use the standard flat 749 or 999 cases, the NON deep sump cases. The flat cases from an standards 749/999/998. these cases are alot cheaper. Than you only need to modify your horizontal exhaust pipe.
I get an offer from the hungarian dealer 749case for 200eur but need to check regardind cracks because he sad there is a small crack but on outside at one fixing point. Its only 120km from my house so friday i will got to check it. Hopefully will be much better like mine.
it will probably be on the rear swingarm mounting point - careful as they can grow like your original one across the bolt hole..
Bought a set of good, low miles 999 deep-sump crank cases for £200. Look to buy ones damaged by the chain, as Mark (MADASL) might be able to repair them.
Hi All, So i was on friday at the dealer for the cranckase and it was cacked in lot of places not only at the fixixng point like he sad in the phone. He even didnt know that and he paid my half fuel cost. I really wondering that how these engines are developed? Still thinking about welding and if it will no work then i will try to sell the bike for some coins.
Thanks, but as i mentoined i dont want to invest 1000euro for a cases. I think i will weld it and let see what happens.
