"Speed costs money...how fast do you want to go?"...

  1. ....as the saying goes...
    But does performance have to be expensive?
    For instance,I'm a...er...fairly heavy old Hector,(put politely :eek:)
    I'm sure dieting is cheaper than gasflowing or titanium bolts
    However passing a chippy without going in might be an unbearable torment
    So I wondered whether it's worth the emotional stress
    How much weight would I have to lose to get a performance gain,equivalent to 1 horsepower?
    Is there a fixed formula?
     
  2. I relation to sailboats Dick Newick, a renowned multihull designer recently deceased, said you can have two out of three from performance, comfort or low cost.

  3. Forget performance mods. Concentrate on getting the bike to ride the bumps better, turn better and stop better. Performance is nothing without control.

    Better suspension, lighter wheels, improved brakes (although if its got monoblocs then ignore the brake mods for now). Then get it dyno'd/set up properly by someone like CJS.
     
  4. Unfortunately you are correct. Speed does cost money. £100 plus 4 points in my case :frown:

  5. Shaving weight of the bike is preferable to weight off your arse. One will be permanent, the other last until the next beer fest
     
  6. I know that lighter wheels=less unsprung weight=improved handling etc.
    No Monoblocs on a '93 750SS though...
    This is the thing:
    I love that little bike,it already handles/stops really well (at the speeds I can reach on it anyway)
    But:
    I have the 900 (with 944 kit on it), as well,so have been trying to sell the 750 because it's just a bit down on grunt in comparison.
    Although the 750 is sooo much nicer to ride.
    So,can I get more out of the 750 by putting a bit less of me on it?
    And if so,how much less of me does there need to be,to make a noticeable difference?

  10. Thats actually not bad:I reckon I could lose 6-7kgs without looking like a starving refugee
    I think the 750 puts out about 60 or summat?
    So a 5%/3bhp increase for nowt would be a right result

  13. If you can't be arsed to lose weight then get a turbo sports car, big gains can be made for bugger all money

  16. Indeed. The engine in my 1098s has more than enough power, but I do like to know that I can stop when I have to :smile:
     
  17. Just buy a ZZR 1400,at least as cheap as chips.:)
