Evening all, sorry if this has been discussed before, couldn't find much on the subject after using the search function. Would love a bit more tank range and i'm considering either a carbon fibre fuel tank from CDT or possibly an DP aluminium tank for my 1098R. The only thing that puts me off with the aluminium tank is it's a lot of money for a mere 1.5litres extra capacity, whereas the carbon fibre one is about 18.6litres according to Carbon Trader, and costs less. Just wondered if anyone had bought either of these items, and what they thought of them, and how much extra mileage you got etc?
Personally I'd crack on carbon, 2 items I've never had but wanted are carbon tank and wheels...but if I was using on track I'd go Alli purely because I think it would hold up better in an off
Aluminium. Costs more, but guaranteed fitment, no fracture concerns, and they can be easily resold for good money/£800+. There was a carbon tank that just sold on eBay for sub£400 which shows they just aren't in much demand. fwiw, I have the DP ally tank with my R, and the extra capacity is noticeably useful.
Interesting...... might have to look into it a bit more. I read a few posts on a US forum about leaking tanks, but their fuel has more ethanol added to it, which may be the affecting factor. Looking at the "Beater" aluminium tanks in Japan, bit cheaper than the DP one, but still with 20litres capacity on the 1098R. May have to order one and be patient for 10-12 weeks.
The Beater tanks look amazing....but pricey indeed! How much have you found one for? Aren't you better off looking for a used DP tank?
I've recently been given a carbon 996 tank because it had been in an crash and fractured. I feel sure a steel or ali item wouldn't be scrap for the owner right now. A bit of filler and some paint can do a lot should the worst happen. A complete char grilled bike would be harder to fix if you were thinking of riding hard with a carbon tank. As it happens though, I've repaired the 996 tank, and am currently modifying it to give a smaller fuel capacity and larger air box for my track bike.
I've tried looking for a used aluminium tank, but all i can find is a black 1198SP item on evil-bay, for stupid money, and it's in the States too. So, once you've added import duty, VAT etc it's getting expensive, plus it needs painting too. The "Beater" tank i've found (for the 1098R - a specific tank according to their catalogue) from a supplier in Japan is around £1036 at todays exchange rates, plus postage and import duty etc etc, which according to duty-calculator, will be another £276-ish. I've been in touch with a UK manufacturer of aluminium fuel tanks, and i'm awaiting a decision to see if they are interested in doing a small production run (a minimum of 10 was mentioned), but it's going to be down to interest from the forums and more importantly deposits placed, unless i can interest a dealer in taking a batch, to help with numbers etc. When i know more, i'll post details, but they may say no, as the 848/1098/1198 tank isn't exactly an easy shape to form.
Another option maybe as the endurance version seems to have extra capacity. FuelCel Ducati 848-1098-1198
Yes, i did look at this one, it's quite highly regarded on the yank forums. The only thing that put me off was the sheer size of the thing (saw a pic of it on a bike and it looked out of proportion) and how when i did a bit of research into it, a few people said theirs had leaked, and had various pin-holes in it, needing further repair works. All this for just a few extra litres!
Dn t go tank shop. I know quite a few who have tried to use the, but for 9 months later to have received nothing
If push came to shove, I could probably make a carbon version, but I'm soooo busy, and not having the bike would make it a nightmare too. I could do some figures, and have a word with a partner to see how viable it is if there's enough interest. But you're still left with a carbon tank which I couldn't guarantee in a crash.
This seller keeps popping up with this listing DUCATI 848 EVO CORSE SE 2013 LARGER BRUSHED ALLOY FUEL TANK 1098 1198 1198S 848 | eBay
Just placed an order for a 20litre "Beater" aluminium tank. It's the tank in the middle of the picture. The tank on the left is the 25litre "endurance" tank. Just got to be patient and wait now.........delivery around end of March!
Argonaut, you really are the devil incarnate , there's me deciding that that the 1198s is a keeper and I'm too tall for the Pani, so, decide to source the full termi headers and now waiting for the "pay cheque" to pay for those, with a mind for an SP tank in the future, and now you bring this thread up !!!!!!
Sorry mate .....Yeah, the 1198S is definitely a keeper. I tried the Panigale and didn't really get on with it (6'3" tall + bit fat), had a feeling if i binned it, the surgeon would be removing that rear shock from my arse. So forget the SP tank, seems like it's a lot of lolly (looks good though), get the Beater tank instead, mucho cheaper and bigger! Endurance tank is the same money and looks rather saucy with that fuel filler cap. Mmmmm.......double filler cap! NCR Corse titanium rearsets next on the shopping list. More money than sense, but then again no wife and kids to pay for!
