major service times

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by mark bevan, Dec 7, 2013.

  1. Hi All,

I'm working on my 03 999s over winter - initially to sort the fuel pump running when the ignition is switched off.

Now looking at what else to do other than the belts?

    The bike has 13k miles.

I'm also removing the Datatool series 3 alarm/immobiliser.

    Thanks.

    Mark

  2. I'm also working on mine
New brake pads (clean the brake pistons) and bleed
    Change clutch fluid
Clutch out clean all the steel plates and remove all the dust
    Change the fuel relay.
    Belts were done last year!
    Fit new carbon exhaust guard
Whilst all the fairings off , clean the bike, chain etc.
Go round the bike and check all nuts and bolts are tight.
New spark plugs .. WD 40 the coil at the front.
    Change oil /filters
    Clean air filters
I'm sure more things to do will pop up.
Sit on it and have a few test runs to the coast........in the warmth of my garage :biggrin:lol

  3. Hi and thanks - looking for things like when valve gaps should be checked?

How many valves does my bike have?

  5. Thanks Phil.

Yes, that's wheely wheely funny. My sides are splitting.

Anyone advise on the valve checking times etc ? My bike has done just over 13k miles?

  6. does your bike come with any service history??

According to the manual valve clearance must be checked every 10000 km's
and by 20000 km's this must be checked according to the manual:
    - timing belt check
    - replace engine coolant
    - clean tank and change fuel filter
    - trottle bodies need synchronising
    - check oil pressure
    - check compression from cylinders
    - check steering bearing
    - general lubrication and greasing

  7. I believe the belts should be changed every 2 yrs irrespective of mileage .
    I also have a list.
Tidy up back light area , which is to remove separate number plate light and fit some led's in the back light housing just to tidy the area up.
Fuel pump relay mod , im in the middle of this but the heat shield screws are rounded off !
    spark plugs, oil, filter ect.
I was going to change the fuel filter but that can wait until the larger capaacity tank arrives next week .

I got the bike (999s) in febuary and did new clutch plates and fluids then.

  8. Thanks mrfurry & chase.

I have done the fork seals, full clutch, coolant, oil & filter and brake & clutch fluid this summer.

Have problems with; rear light blowing after every other ride, fuel pump running when the ignition is switched off after a ride, faulty datatool immobiliser/alarm - (this may be the cause of the fuel pump running).

I have removed the datatool system.

    So that leaves;

Replace belts, spark plugs, check/replace valve shims as required, check all electrical connectors and clean, replace all relays and fuses, renew fuel filter and O ring, throttle bodies need synchronising, check compression and check steering head bearing.

    Missed anything?

  9. TPS Reset

    Replace coolant

Some would check the Alternator nut.

  10. Alternator nut - good call , i had better do mine , or are these just forum horror stories ?

  11. Yes and no.

Was supposed to be rectified on the Testastretta engines but..........

If the oil and screen are clean I wouldnt bother.

  12. Thanks JC

  13. Just a quickie, saw this once a good few years ago and after a bit of head scratching found out that the tail light wires travelling up the metal tube bolted to the underside of the exhaust were chaffing. They were shorting out and blowing the bulb and occasionally doing a fuse as well.

Worth thy a check as it's so easy to do.

  14. How do I find out if the ECU in my bike is the correct one?

My bike was fitted with Termis which have now disintegrated and I am sick of getting them welded up. I purchased a stock exhaust box which I will fit when I put the bike back together.

    The markings on the ECU are;
    3X-135N9F
    0130PX22
    96510603B

I understand the termis require different air filters and ECU? So going back to a stock exhaust box will require a stock ECU?

  15. Or OEM filters and a power commander.

  16. Hi Mark,

I had the same symptom recently - popped into the garage to find the fuel pump whirring away and the whole thing tank getting quite hot as a result. It had probably been running for a couple of hours by then!! Hastily unbolted the seat to disconnect the fuel pump electrics.

Various people on here pointed the finger at the ignition relay (behind the battery box) and sure enough it was severely corroded. Replaced and positioned it outside the battery box for ease of access (getting at it is otherwise a complete pain!).

    cheers,
    Dom

  17. Thanks Dom,

I will be back in the garage PM tomorrow hopefully so will try and find the relay - I have already stripped the battery box out so hope it will be easy to find.

    Making a list of parts for my 03 999s;

Top O ring, oil net filter, bottom O ring and a cover gasket - has anyone changed this filter in the deep sump?
    Head (cam) gaskets - 2no
Injection Control Unit ( if I find mine is wrong for whatever exhaust option I end up with)
Screws for the battery box heat shield
Spark plugs - only use Champion
Fuel filter and new large O ring
Air filters - again to match the exhaust
Looking at a new exhaust system

I have previously sourced parts from Moto Rapido. Is this best?

  18. Hi Mark , i posted recently about the super service recieved by Moto Rapido , I have no connections with them !

  19. Thanks Chase,

I'll call them today for prices.

    Regards,

    Mark.

  20. I wouldn't bother checking the compression, if its running well its going to be fine, if its low you will have other issues. Short of rebuilding the engine there is no way of changing or adjusting it anyway. I do wonder if ducati put things like that into the service schedule to enable them to justify the service charges.

Belts and blowing out the clutch dust aside (dry clutch bikes only) there is no reason why a ducati would need any more attention than any other bike.
