821 - is the SP really that much better?

Discussion in 'Hypermotard' started by JerryXt, Dec 7, 2013.

  1. I've been hooning around on a loaner hypermotard this week while the loaner mutley was having its 600 mile service.

It's just as bonkers as I remember and it would fill a small hole in my bike stable really well : ) I don't want to buy a bike and then spend a load of money upgrading it. So, did anyone who bought an SP ride a base model, and what was your experience?

    thanks!

  2. No experience but I was in Moto Rapido this morning and a customer asked Wilf when they were going to put the 1199 into a Street Fighter. That got the conversation round to what is available which included the new 1200 Monster, the naked S1000R and the KTM 1290 R and whether you needed that sort of power in a naked bike. Clearly the answer is yes and the Hyper SP neatly fits in this category of mental performance and extreme fun. Andy

  3. Yes I did take a hyperstrada out as the only sp in the shop was sold
and yes the difference is big......power delivery, obviously the suspension being ohlins etc makes a big difference
the strada is nice but the sp is superb so I bough the sp without a test ride and don't regret it at all
it was always the intention but the strada was the test ride...no complaints about it but not as exciting as the sp, plus the sp looks the dogs danglies

  4. +1 on that!

  5. Mate tried the, back to back. Said way better, crisper and 'more'. He's coming off a 950SM and found the SP far more lunatic in the same mould than the std one

  6. thanks chaps! I was on the 'standard' model for a week and found it completely bonkers in sport mode. It's like a pint of espresso on top of a couple of lines.

Hated the tyres, loved the rest of it!

  7. What are you getting out of a tank with "spirited" riding?
Fancy an SP as an alternative to the multi when the spring breaks (though I think a new superduke R is more likely)

  8. I have the skyhook multi and the SP. A really great combo. The SP feels so light and nimble, with the full termi too it is a real hoot. You'll probably want to fit the full system to the multi too after you have heard the SP noise. It makes the multi sound shite on its standard exhaust.

Couldn't be happier with my 2 bikes.

I fitted PR3s to the SP as I wanted to use it thought the UK winter. The super corsas were no fun for winter riding.

  9. Kiwi suspension experts can sort the Standard for NZD$2K so I save five grand on the SP- no brainer really.

PS Dark Stealth vs SP they white? Meh, go dark.

  10. I costed getting a base model to where I would want it to be and it was more than the difference between the two models. Its not just suspension: the wheels, brake master and electronics are all different. And at the end of the day, you'll still have the value of a base model.

But I can understand wanting to do what you're proposing.

  11. I tend to think that in questions like this one, the answer will be a lot different according to the perspective of the person that answers.

I bought the base model 3 weeks ago although I was looking for the sp. The main reason looking for the sp was that I liked all the bling and the extras but I bought the base one as I found one at a great price.

After I bought the base model, I had the chance to test ride an sp and do I still believe that there is a big difference?

Yes there is a difference but from my point of view not huge. You get a bit of a better suspension feedback and it is of course great that you can adjust the settings and also did like the better master cylinder. Did not find any differences in the power delivery and the sp map can be uploaded to a base model so I do not see any difference there.

I strongly believe that the base model is excellent, a proper hooligan that you can do whatever you want including the odd track day but I will always have a lust for the sp just for the bling factor!!!

If someone is trying to get a base model cause of money constraints and try to upgrade at an sp spec then just get an sp! But if you are considering buying a hyper then know that the base model is just great with the sp being a 'click' higher but most of the advantages would be fully seen in very fast riding days such as tracks days due to the suspension and brake master cylinder!

  12. Had my SP for a few weeks after mainly big sports bikes and a tuono v4. The reason I bought it was to be able to get more road riding on standard UK roads instead of searching out clean A roads and dual carriageways and hoping not to bump into a speed camera. It opens up miles of new adventures, bends, sights, and fun. Yesterday I followed my mate for 100 miles on his Panigale and was only embarrassed on the dual carriageways - that was 10% of the ride. For the rest of the ride, the SP was in it's element - towns, lanes, quick bends - even rough Tarmac. No sore wrists, no hot arse.

In answer to your question, I test rode a standard hyper 821 but bought the SP. But in honesty, the smile when riding is the same with either. It's just when you get to polish it your glad you had the SP.

I am doing 2 days at Rockingham and 2 at Portimao soon, I think the suspension will make a big difference - a bit of twiddling made it just right for roads - so the tyres and more twiddling should give it the edge for track.
