Bought it off flea bay . Thats not a picture of the ducati one . It has a nut on the bottom for tightening. Heres mine for the 999.
I had the same problem last change on my 999. Ended up drilling out between the oil channels of the filter housing, pulling off the outer then had enough purchase to twist of the remaining nut. Like Hyper Steve I have now used the K&N but am dreading next change as I can imagine the nut popping off.
About the same price as an OEM Ducati filter.... K&N Powersports Oil Filter - KN-153 - SPORTSBIKESHOP AL
I made a tool for this when my Monster filter did the same; I only use K&N filters that have the nut on them...
I've got exactly the same thing to go through. Got a friend who could grind a 32mm nut into the shape of the holes so I could get the ratchet on it but going to try the pliers first.
I wouldn't be too sure about the K&N ..... on the last one I used the nut just rounded off when I tried to remove it. Had to resort to the old strap wrench, which wizzed it straight off. I had done it up to the recommended torque, rather than hand tight, in an effort to stop it weeping but I've had a much harder struggle with the strap wrench on previous filters so it wasn't that tight.
dukedesmo's idea works a treat made my own version had the filter off in no time after i had struggled for a fair time oh and a pic of ducati oil filter service kit
I always get nervous about removing the oil filter on my pair of beasts, especially in light of some of the near misses some people have had, so on the recommendation of some one on the forum i got this for the job
Hate to say it but I tried one them first and it just span. The next thing was a screwdriver in the side that just opened it up like a tin of beans. I've taken out the insides and will try a homemade tool consisting of two m5 bolts and an m10 nut in the middle. Thanks dukedesmo for the advise, will let you know how I get on.
Got the filter off in the end thanks to the ideas on here (how helpful these forums are!) made a tool in the and managed to tighten the centre nut enough. I'll keep this tool in case anyone else gets stuck.
As mentioned a big jubilee clip and then a brisk tap against the screw slot using a suitable screwdriver should shift it. This method has always worked for me and you can get some real purchase against the filter and it won't do any damage.
I had problems with the centre nut turning, so I welded it on. Useful tool to have although, hopefully won't need it again.
My Triumph had a K&N filter with a nut on the bottom, I whipped out my trusty 17mm, gave it a twirl and...the nut fell off! Not 100% foolproof.
