1098s to 1098r, how much?

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Robarano, Dec 13, 2013.

  1. In what way?

  2. I had a Desmo, didn't keep it, but cannot say it wasn't fun.

Wind it up on the right road and there is nothing like it, especially with the race pipes fitted.

1098R is a mega bike and seeing that you do about 400 miles a year, it not going to cost alot in maintenance.

If you want one, get one.

  3. Such a serious and stiff bike! Too precious. It's all business.

  4. Forgive me if I'm speaking out of turn here or if I'm inaccurate. I'm led to believe that the 09 1098S has the same engine as the full blown 08 1098R?? Ok, I understand that it's not an R, but let's not split hairs.

An 09 1098S is a helluva bike, on the value front that's where my money would be going - perhaps??

  5. No.

Although having a "1098" moniker, the 1098R has an 1198cc engine, magnesium and titanium this and that for WSBK homologation. Several of the 2008 1098Rs were pre-registered by Ducati at the factory for homologation, just so the bike would qualify for the minimum homologation units. The 1098R has 186hp out of the box, and it was Ducati's strongest testastretta motor - more so than even the later 1198SP that detuned the engine.

The 1098S is a standard 1098cc engine and probably 30hp down in comparison.

  6. Just goes to show you shouldn't believe the bollocks MCN would have you believe ...

  7. There's a decent (for the internet!) article on the 1098R here that explains a few of the differences - Ducati 1098 R - webBikeWorld

At the time it was released, it was also the first production bike in the world (I think) to have traction control.

  8. correct but not very subtle TC...it only cuts the spark...it's a bit like hitting the rev limiter...

  9. Budget £10k and you may find you have some change

  10. not worth it imho

  11. Agreed. On the basis of a few in the classified ads for £12k to £15k, my bike must be worth £2k to £5k

  12. you can narrow the gap a bit by taking your extras off the bike and selling them seperately, dealers want a standard bike don't they and they don't value the bits .

  13. Sell private. Dealers will bum you and not even buy you a kebab first!

  14. They don't value them when offering you a shit trade in, they soon value them when flogging the bike on!

  15. If someone was to say that a 1098R is the same as an 1198/ S/ SP etc. 9 out of 10 won't have ridden 1 and probably walked around with their 'eyes wide shut', whilst listening and reading to what's been written in the crappy news papers and magazines. Having ridden all the 10/1198 incarnations, the 1098R is far more aggressive. Not in a bad way, but you'll notice it quite a lot. Most may say that its only 10HP here or 100CC there or similar and all the parts are the same etc, but again they'll be wrong. When the 996R was produced, the 998S had the same engine, but without all the expensive trick bits and so on. As the generations of WSBK has evolved, so have all the internals.

If you want to understand the difference, talk directly to an R owner, instead of all the Wannabe's.

  18. Isn't the 1198SP and the 848 Evo Corse available in those colours too though the 848 is minus the alloy tank.

  19. Do you know any?
