TL 1000 engine strip.

  1. After the gearbox ate itself due to cautious careful riding :biggrin::biggrin: I thought it time to take it out and fix it.

First thing I noticed, it's a damn site lighter than my 996 motor. Barring a 4 prong socket to take off a type of castle nut there's been no special tools needed yet either. :upyeah:

If anyone's actually interested I can post some pictures of how the strip/build go. But I'm guessing it's the wrong forum for it.

  2. Stick it up.

  3. Weren't there a few who chucked this motor in a 916?

  4. Cracking motors. Just a shame Suzuki didn't give it a decent chassis to start with.

  5. Yep, chuck the pictures up :)

  6. Yeah I've heard of a few TL motors in 916 style chassis. The TL really is all over the shop when you start pushing on a bit and I just can't confidently commit to corners past about 120-130mph. It's tried to kill me a few times hitting bumps on fast sweepers. But i only bought it to commute on and keep my V2 riding style for when I actually get the time/money to take my 996 out to play.

  7. Is it an S or an R? Guessing R???

  8. No it's an S. First year model too so it's not been diluted or softened off at all. For 15 odd years old it's awesome. Just not Ducati awesome, and I doubt I'd get over 150BHP out of it like my 996.

  9. Brave man ;)

  10. One of our suppliers drag races a TL-R at Santa Pod, his has a big bore conversion, heavily reworked heads, wild cams, an airshifter, a lengthened swingarm and a 75hp direct nitrous injection system. It makes 165rwhp before the nitrous!

Last time we spoke he ran a 9.1 without the gas as he was struggling with the front end lifting

  11. That TL-R sounds like an animal ATTILA, but I'll bet my 996 will beat it round Mallory Park. LOL

I was thinking of putting Hi Comp pistons in while it's apart, but for my daily ride I know I'd do better spending on the chassis. I was a bit disappointed with the standard 996SPS motor hence the mods, but the TL-S I think is great. It's only when I get into top does my pals 05 GSXR 1000 pull away hard, and he's 6 stone heavier than me.

  12. Yes,best bung some pics up of the rebuild.Ive got an S lump spread over one of my work benches waiting to be stuck back together.

  13. Replace rear shock if not already done mate. Gixer radial k3+ frontend works well and common mod on them, also have you done the airbox mod ?(cut out inner oval from top of airbox cover).

  14. Oh, Ya wanna try a superduke R (2008+) if ya think the TLS is mad ;)

  15. My TLS had a standard shock but a separate Ohlins damper, and the front end was reworked by Maxton (all done by a previous owner) and it handled superbly. Some mild tuning had apparently been carried out too, but I've no idea what, it was a hell of a bike though, I only got rid cos I thought I'd end up in prison if I carried on riding it.

  16. I've ridden a few early S models, lovely bikes! Be interested to see the motor apart :upyeah:

  17. SD/SDR Engine basically a smaller tl engine. 130rwhp with cans fitted and mapping.

  18. OK, so here we have the featherweight engine.

    Cam covers off.

    Cams out.

Ooooooops. Taking the Idler gear out I hear the tinkle of something metal falling into something metal. How glad was I to see a spacing washer where you do in the pic.
    IMAG1312.jpg
All valves look pretty good in the rear.
    IMAG1315.jpg
    Barrel good too.
    IMAG1318.jpg
Yep. If the front's as good as this the bikes a keeper and I'll not mind shelling the money out to fix the box now. Piston Good.
    IMAG1319.jpg
Beautiful tabs on the alternator cover front and rear are perfectly placed to rock the cover off.
    IMAG1320.jpg
And finally the alternator and amazing floating gear.

It's a piece of cake to work on the TL up to now. I can see why Ducati mechanics earn their money. I just hope it ends up going back together as easy. But having all parts bagged and/or labelled should help.

I'll let you know what happens tomorrow. Maybe nothing.

  19. So, another day, another new swear word to invent.
This morning the front head came off, along with the clutch and water pump covers.
    IMAG1328.jpg
Then clutch came out, a slipper clutch no doubt with this being the first production bike fitted with a one from the factory.
    IMAG1330.jpg
But the water pump impeller wouldn't budge.
    IMAG1331.jpg
Draw it off the shaft the book says. Hmmm... pair of screw drivers down the back should do it.
    IMAG1334.jpg IMAG1342.jpg
    Ooooooh. Erm... Dremmel time.
    IMAG1343.jpg
Aaaaaannnd the right casing is off.
    IMAG1336.jpg
Big nut of a size I haven't got here, and
    IMAG1337.jpg
the need for a flywheel puller
    IMAG1340.jpg
    stops play for today. :frown:

The good news is the piston, barrel, valves and the likes of the front pot is as good as the rear, I can't feel any nasty bearings, all nuts so far have been undone by a skinny bloke with a dumb bell bar as a ratchet extension, and the shopping list has started

    SHOPPING LIST.
    1. IMPELLER.

I hate buying tools twice, or if I can borrow them from work. So I don't know when I'll post any more news as my tools are scattered to the 4 corners of the world and I'm not in work until Tuesday.

  20. I've got a 2004 Dl1000 V-Strom with a detuned version of your engine. Lovely motor and no trouble at all over 30,000 miles.
What mileage had yours done when it broke?
