Check your frame bolts

  1. Hi Kope, didn't you have an off on one of your trackdays? They could argue that was possibly a contributing factor?
I think with the many track days you have done this is a warning that a more thorough check is required, and would be looking at putting locktight onto these and many more bolts, and look into extending your post track maintenance schedule.
But it might be an engineering fault or just not torqued correctly from the factory.

  2. Gents

As the bike is at M RAPIDO i cant check for myself . And i m sure the guys there will do all the right things to it . Perhaps m just pitting on bolts with the blue plastic selfstopping type thingy shouls do it , no ?

  3. Hi Kope,

I know the nylock nuts your talking about, but what is the heat range of them bolts? what temperature are they going to be subject to, need thinking about, before you change.

Just had a quick look for you, you should be ok with these

  4. Er, shit, that's really crap.

  5. So is this a Ducati/ Pani problem or your use of the bike Kopey and all the changing of components done by your mechanics.
As mentioned above (previous page) you've done a lot of tracking , I would assume race teams would be checking through the bike with a fair amount of thoroughness on a regular basis.
If a Pani problem I hope some of you guys with them will check to see how much of a problem could be about to unfold for Ducati.

  6. Just to add to the fun.....

My Pani is going back to Ducati this week after a major and serious failure. I haven't seen my engine bolts, but when my ride by wire throttle kept accelerating even when I had shut the throttle that spooked me!

Doing 70mph+ approaching wet roundabout, I closed the throttle and went for gentle brakes, bike just kept accelerating!!! Clutch in quick, brakes on hard at that point, at least 50m later than I wanted, coast it back under control...... not happy. I went into the roundabout about 40mph too hot, on a cold, wet day with minimal grip. Thankfully through a fortunate gap in the traffic which opened up.

It did it three more times following that, but I was limping it home slowly at that point so just coasting at 30mph with fingers on the clutch.

Not best pleased. That made my heart race a bit...... I am used to stroppy Italian hardware too, but not happy. I am glad that happened when there was a gap in the traffic (thank goodness as it was rush hour), but it would be equally bad if it happened when going a bit hot into turn 3 on a track etc.....

I want to like my Panigale, but it hasn't been a love affair so far I can tell you..... that might be my final outing on it.

Prior to doing this, it was throwing gear position errors (saying it was in gear 1 all the time) - just as a forewarning.

The boys at JHP will be able to sort it, but I am quite alarmed that it could happen, and glad it wasn't worse.

  7. Those things are scary indeed .. Feedback i getting from all over is that i hae to cinsideru bike being a race bike . And those need dif checking procedorss ..

What will remain a mistery is why an engineer would decide not to use self tightening studs but just those that have all the potential to rattle all the way off ...

  8. about time ducati got these bikes back in before someone gets killed yes that's strong but something is not right here with these bikes

  9. Would be better off fitting a Transit EPIC accelerator pedal.

  10. I wouldn't be trusting anything but lock-wire on the fasteners now.

  11. That is worrying. At least you know where you are with a trellis frame!!

  12. WOW!!!!! Possibly a VERY deadly fault. (Frame and Fly By Wire fault)

  13. Lack of a frame is what worries me - I'm no fan of fly by wire throttles either!

After reading this thread had a look at mine and fortunately all four nuts are still in place. Regarding the discussion on use of fastener as you can see in the pic, the fastners are self locking. For each fixing there are 2 serrated faced washers and the Nut is also serrated faced.

Just for piece of mind I smeared some thread lock.

Kope - did you also find 8 washers in your airbox ? - maybe these were not fitted leaving only the nut to fix directly to the airbox body ?
