Carbon fibre undertray......anyone fitted one?

  1. Afternoon all,

Anyone here bought/fitted a carbon fibre undertray at all?

If so, what was the quality like? how well did it fit? did it last long, what with the exhausts sitting underneath it etc.

Tempted to get one, as i noticed my undertray is cracked and some of the tangs/hooks have broken, so an alternative product would be nice, whilst i'm bored and need something to do

  2. Not fitted one myself, but have heard that they are a mare to do. Complete strip down of tail to get it off/ on. The inflexibility of the carbon could make refitting the tail a pain too, even more so if its a poorly made one that's a hit out of shape.

  3. I purchased one ages ago. Was a nightmare to fit, as there's no flex. Worse than the air tube covers and under tank bits. I sold it on eBay for what I paid.

  4. I got one for my 748s and it went on with no problems and looks great , I have the standard one there if interested

  5. I have one on mine, no issues at all with the exhaust under it, the carbon under tail piece is from shift-tech it fits nice where it's supposed to and it does help if you have the carbon Termi mufflers for the heat but like others said you do have to take the tail section apart to put it in!

  6. Ok thanks for the opinions guys.

I've been offered one on trial to see how it fits, so i'll give it a go. Thankfully i can get the whole back-end dismantled in a few minutes easily enough, so thats no problem.

  7. Argonaut, you PM box if full :) (not to do with this though)

  8. Just emptied it matey!

  9. I've fitted 4....but I wasn't happy enough with any of them to let them stay fitted!!!!

I wanted a mega quality/fit but couldn't find anything to live up to my standards!! I was prepared to pay a premium for the right one, tried one from Holland, one from a company in Italy & one from the carbon company that advertises on here, can't remember where the other one came from!!

To be fair the quality was good, but none of them fitted as good as the standard one. Does the one you have fit as good as standard Sinister? If so I might give the company a shout.

I gave up in the end...but looking on the bright side....I'm an expert at fitting them!!!

  10. My new one arrived today.

I've got to cut and fit the heat-shielding to it and then install it on the bike, which shouldn't take too long.

I'll see what it's like when it's fitted and will post my findings here.

The item I've got was made by CDT, so the quality is there, but as to how it fits........guess I'll find out tomorrow.

  11. The 748 one wont need to clip into the seat unit like the 1098 one does.

  12. hmmmm...........

Eventually fitted the carbon fibre undertray, after much annoyance with the wiring on the numberplate/indicator hanger, bolted it all into place and fitted the seat unit.

The left-hand-side fits superbly, just like the OEM version.

However......the right-hand-side isn't so snug. One tab (where the seat side panels end) is a little proud and needs gently trimming back with a Dremmel in order to let it sit properly. It doesn't help that the 1098R seat unit has been removed and replaced a few times over it's lifetime and to be honest, it's been abused (not by me), and i'm not mental enough to buy a new one.

So, to sum up, am i happy?.......

Yes, but it needs minor remedial work to fit properly. It's not as bad as i thought it would be, but it's not something i'd want to do again unless money was being stuffed into my paw.

    would i recommend it?

Yes, if you are willing to accept it may need some Dremmel-action to fit properly, and want something a bit better looking than the OEM unit (which in all fairness can hardly be seen anyway).

The item i bought was a CDT item from Carbon Trader - Who i have no connection with other than being a happy customer (with cuts on my fingers now)
