Petrol Tank Removal and Re fit

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Fastmonkey, Dec 2, 2013.

  1. So not to clog this section up............ (I am only starting new threads as it helps for other people when searching)

I have a spare OEM Petrol tank which I want to run instead of my mint current one that is installed whilst I convert my 848 evo to track spec. All bodywork is removed other than the tank so that is my last job before I build back up.

So removing bodywork is one thing but I'm a bit nervous about messing about with the petrol system / tank etc.

So anyone able to help me walk through this, I had a look on my spare one and it looks like the fuel line clips are not jubilee style so the previous owner of the tank has just cut the lines to take it off. The one on my bike currently of course has it all in place.

Oh and my tank is full of petrol........... but I've bought a syphoner for that bit !

  2. Its easy. Be prepared with the bolts tho as the plastic tends to hold on to them and i had to drill the heads off a couple when i changed it. Or, get hold of another pump and job done!

memory...remove side infills which fit to back of tank, seat, one bolt back of tank, lift and pull locating pins out of housing at the front, loft tank, undo quick release fasteners, remove and done. There is no drain plug (that I could find) so bit of a pain to drain tank

  3. Thanks Bradders I'll give that a go then and report back. When you say "Be prepared with the bolts tho as the plastic tends to hold on to them" which specific bolts are you talking about ?

abmatt - thanks for the link but I couldn't see the 848 listed in the manuals.

  4. The ones that hold the fixings on bottom/side of tank and fuel pump. Soft heads plus thread lock equals bastard!

  5. Found this on You Tube - might help

  6. tomorrow is the day for tank removal can't wait to get siphoning and stuck in.

  7. What on earth was the butchery going on with the pliers in Borgo's video clip? totally unnecessary. The fuel connectors undo with the squeezing of the clips with your finger tips. You do have to squeeze quite hard, but you certainly don't need pliers!

  8. ^^^ Good tip thanks.

  9. Fastmonkey You need to grip the 'notched' part of the plastic clip on the quick realease fuel connectors very firmly between your thumb and index finger tips and squeeze. This will release the locking action of the clip and enable you to pull the connector off downwards. It will all make sense once the clip is off and you can see what's going on.

  10. I left mine on

  11. That looks very nice, any more pics, be good to see what your belly pan decals look like. Any idea what screen / seat pad and petrol filler cap you have ?

  12. Yeh it's the same screen they use in the 848 challenge, can't remember who makes it as thrown the bag away now. The plastics look shit close up as they're unpainted - not overly fussed on that as it is now a track bike after all. The graphics are just odd stickers I had collected over the years..

  13. Just to complete this thread, job done. Just took my time and it was pretty easy really. There is a bit of fuel in the pipes that you remove with the connectors but I had already laid a towel under there so that got collected ok. Need to get a racing filler cap and it's done.

    Before, during and after !

  14. tank pitting

IMG_1239.jpg Hi just noticed you have the same tank as me, keep it clean especially splattered fly's. I left some on for a few days, and when I cleaned them off a pit in the alloy had developed underneath. I know it doesn't look like much in the pic but as the rest of the tank is unmarked it's very visible. I'm talking to my dealer about it but not holding out much hope. I've spoken to some polishing companies and they don't want to touch it. ultimately the only option will be to get it sprayed. Just some friendly advice.

  15. Alloy? Assume you dont have a std plastic 848/1*98 tank then

  16. I didn't know the standard one was plastic, is it? the 2013 corse has the larger ally tank, Ducati probably had a stack of them on the shelf that they wanted to get rid of as the 899 was coming along.

  17. Yep the corse did but the rest plastic

  18. From the picture it looks like a stone chip? Am I right in thinking there is some sort of coating on the aluminium tank.... A lacquer?
