tell me about tablets………..

  1. I am only just beginning to understand what jailbreaking is about. I am assuming it is legal (?) but involves putting 3rd party code onto the machine to open it up to a wider range of options / apps ? How do we know that the code does only what it says on the tin and nothing else ?

    Any insights from anyone ?

  2. Android all the way. From a nerdy point of view..... Bootloaders unlockable. Os reflashable....eg my wife's old desire HD is running KitKat greasy smooth and its about 4 years old now.....let's see an apple anything do that....

For me nexus 10. Same as above.

  3. Apple has a couple of benefits. Ok, it's not a tablet, but my Mac mini runs exactly the same now as it did when it came out of the box six years ago, no viruses no problems no fuss - not even a defrag. It's as quick and stable now as the first time it was fired up with absolutely zero maintenance. The other benefit is retained value. The mac mini was just over £400 new and would still command around £250 second hand now. A £400 pc would be totally worthless at six years old.

If you don't need the ability to customise, the apple products are far easier in the long run.

  4. Yes....but...your Mac won't run snow leopard though....a PC of the same age will run windows 7 and probably with just a gfx card 8 ( if you really wanted to) depending on what CPU was in there it would also run 64bit.

But. I do agree the resale value of apple stuff is good.

Having said that whenever I get rid of a rooted, modded android phone they always sell...just sold a 4 year old desire HD for 100quid running KitKat greasy smooth.

  5. Are you related to Couchy ?

  6. Don't think so....I'm an it nerd for a job....messing with phones and tablets is a fun pastime.....always nice to see what you can squeeze out of them....eg. My note 2 runs a modded cyanogen build ( occupies a fraction of the space that the stock ROM does) with an additional kernel flashed its overclocked , faster and the battery lasts 3 times longer. Top stuff.

  7. Most android stuff can be done...if anyone wants some help I'll gladly pitch in....

  8. I have no reason to run snow leopard though, so that's not a problem :)

The mac / windows / android debate is one that will never end, as there are times and place for all. I prefer apple because it seems to require the least input on my part. I've built a few pc's in my time, and never gad an issue I couldn't resolve but I find for home use apple suits me well.

I know people still successfully running 15 year old iMacs without difficulties, so I'm unlikely to be changing any time soon.

  10. When I say people running an old iMac (g3 I think), I do of course mean a person... He's a Mormon and refuses to throw anything away until it cannot be used any more.. as far as I remember he only uses it for church emails, so odds are that in 20 years time it will probably still be in use.

I'm not quite that tight, but apple stuff isn't cheap, so I expect a good service life for the money.

I'm tied into iPhone / iPod because I have an iPod lead / interface in the car, if I got an (another) android I would not be able to charge it and use it for music and navigation in the car.

I found my old HTC wildfire slowed down badly very quickly. By the time it was 18 months old it was all but unusable. My iPhone 4 is holding up well so far, now coming up on a year old.

  11. I did reflash a wildfire sometime ago for someone....pain the arse to get security off ( had to use a Linux box to do it) but I did get it running smoothly with the latest version of sense at the time. Your iPhone 4 I don't think would support an exchange server connection....for me. That's more important than a browser...my daughter had an I phone for a week...she pestered me for it....then gave it back.

Having said that there are 3 iPads in our house and my nexus 10 so yes. They do what they say on the tin. The kids like to use them.

  12. I see no reason why his Mac wouldn't run Snow Leopard. It would have shipped with Snow Leopard, or the earlier system if 6 years old. But if he's already using a more up to date system, why would he want to use Snow Leopard?

My Mac is coming up to 5 years old. Now with RAM upgraded to 8Mb, a flash 500 Gb drive and the Maverics OS X 10.9, it's faster than ever and it's not even a Macbook Pro.

Frankly, I can't be arsed to piss about with computers. I have no interest in them other than as tools to get things done, like contribute (if that's the word...) to this forum or listen to the Ashes cricket stream.

  13. Yeah. This is getting a bit confrontational now. I was only highlighting the merits of the two ways of thinking. Even though I can see the other way of thinking ( yes, we have ipads in our house)...wife and kids use them all the time, and I do understand that Mac stuff has a higher resale value, you do seem to " force " your way of thinking. I was only giving the other side of the story.

  14. This debate is one which will rage as long as the walls are filled with electricity. Don't take it personally, different systems suit different requirements. I completely understand why some prefer android, but it's not for me - doesn't make me right or wrong, it just suits me better.

  15. The pre intel Macs (Power PC) will run Snow Leopard but it makes them very slow, and thats the latest OS that will run on them, rendering them now obselete. We still have a 2005 Mac G5 but its only now for the kids homework and it won't support icloud or the latest version of itunes, however with a bit of rummaging around you can still find older versions of current software that will run on it. its also still a pretty fast machine again with no bugs or viruses after 7+ years of family use.

  16. i don't think its got confrontational

    Vive le différence, i say!!

Each course has its pluses and minuses, this debate merely offers a small insight into why people find certain ones beneficial to them.Reasonable enough.

Bit like Ducatis- some spend decent amount of money (!) paying a dealer to service it for them so they can get on a ride, others like to get under the bonnet and do it themselves, and configure to their specific needs.

Horses for courses - an interesting debate, where no one has tried to force their opinions on others, merely explained their own motivation.

    Very informative.

    :upyeah:

me? I've gone from PCs to Mac ( plus various devices) and i like it.

  17. One annoying thing about Macs, specifically the app store, is that large downloads fail all the blooming time.

I've been trying to download mavericks over a crap connection since it came out and I usually get about 1GB in before it fails and won't re-start from where it left off. In comparison, I've downloaded many gb on iTunes, which seems to handle broken and restarted downloads much better.

  18. I'd probably be ok then, as mine was one of the first dual core intel macs.

    Model Name: Mac mini
    Model Identifier: Macmini2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 2 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz

  19. Just to play devils advocate, is there a vested interest in running an older OS? viruses tend to be designed to target the largest possible audience, so probably windows 7 now. Is XP and windows 98 therefore of less interest to those writing viruses?

XP may still be targeted as its still widely used in business, but surely 98 has dropped off the radar. For someone who emails and surfs but does nothing more, have these older operating systems now become more secure by default?

  20. Not really if you went to say....win 98 your browser wouldn't be able to load half the webpages you went to...the best way is to either sandbox (use VMware, virtual box) or even something like tails....then you can surf, go where you want do what you want and if you get a virus or it becomes unusable then simply delete the VM (Virtual machine) and load another copy....sounds complicated but it isn't really.

A virtual machine is like a pc within a pc...but its dumb - it only knows itself and the outside world (if you restrict it that way).

If you just want to surf and buy stuff, go on forums etc etc...Linux is your best bet, free, easy to use and locked down.
