If you suffer from this annoying condition this may help give you some respite. There must be loads of you out there! I suffer from it because I rode without earplugs for too long and probably (still) drink too much! But I've found something that gives long periods of respite. It's free, simple to do and must be worth a try. It's taken from a book called Secrets of Longevity by Doctor Maoshing Ni. It works for me and I hope it works for you. 1. Cup your hands tightly over your ears sealing them closed with both hands (middle fingers of both hands pointing at each other behind head). 2. Tap left and right sides of back of head at same time like drumming a drum while keeping hands cupped tightly over ears. 3. Do this for 500 times several times per day. (takes about 5-10 minutes each session) 4. Then find the little sore spot (acupressure point behind each ear and press it 9 times) Good luck! I'd love to hear your success stories - or otherwise!
suffered for several years in left ear - doctor said 'its part of the ageing process' its constant at the same pitch learnt to live with it but it still gets me down at times , I do use the cancelling out iphone app which helps I'll give it a go
yep, got it too. I used to have very accute hearing, including hearing IF circuits of TVs (used to drive me mad). I now have constant ringing, also I think from many years of riding without ear plugs. I think I might get a few funny looks in the office if I start tapping my head 500 times though Ron, that made I laugh
Ssssssssssssssssssss. That's my left ear. Constant too . Hearing aid for my right ear. Don't like it though. Not because of aesthetics , but I find I can cope without it. A mechanic by trade but building for the last 35 years. Bikes for 40. If I had to blame anything for my condition it would be lack of ear protection while riding. I have no doubt about that at all.
It makes me very angry at the ignornace of modern riders to earplugs and their neccessity in protecting your hearing. Best thing I have ever bought are the ACS Custom Moulded plugs, just wish my mate would take note!
I have had rather nasty ear infections in the past because of ear plugs. Well not the plugs to blame . More a case of bad hygiene . Making a pair last too Long. Rolling them in with slightly grubby fingers etc . That custom fit ones also would do away with so much of a cross contamination issue. I don't think peoples negative attitude to plugs makes me angry, but I wish they could hear as I hear for a day or two. I'm pretty sure that road/tyre noise in cars can be as bad as well. 100 mile run in my fathers Punto creates more ringing int my ears !
Agreed, long times spent in a car at speed is just as bad s a bike. I reckon the mts12 has certainly worsened my tinitus, due to the turbulence it creates. Without a doubt my ST4S And other bikes didn't make my ears ring as much. I competed in off road events for close on 20 years and no one wore ear plugs. Once I started riding regularly on road back in 97 I started using ear plugs, but again only when on road... Still, my eyesight is going now, and I can't blame that on bikes
Thanks for the post. I also have been troubled with it for the last couple of years. It's a bloody nuisance, especially when it's dead quiet and you're trying to get to sleep.... I have tried it twice and find there is a strange noise from inside my head after about 2 mins of tapping. Maybe the fluid in the inner ear??? Not so sure about the sore spot though? Anything is worth a try!
No tinnitus here, but I now what you mean about tv's, dimmer switches would drive me nuts as well. Dad has quite poor hearing and never believed me that I could hear the tv and the dimmer switch.
Odd, I'm ordering a pair of these because I have started to get tinnitus over the last couple of years, loud concerts, loud music, motorbike riding. And I'm only a month away from 26!!!! I get a high pitch ring in my left ear several times a week, lasting maybe 15-20 seconds each time. Sometimes my right ear. I know this isn't good so I think for £170 that will likely save my hearing later on, it's worth the money. ultimate ear | Ear Plugs | Hearing and Ear Protection London UK | Soundear
I have had tinnitus for years, too many years in computer rooms and working close to computer power supply's. There is no cure you need to relax and train your brain to ignore the noise; easier said than done! Be aware that earplugs can initially make it worse as they contains the "noise" in the ear but again it is then something that you get use to over time. It doesn't bother me on the bike as I find that concentrating on riding makes it easier to ignore the tinnitus, its the quiet places that make me aware of it sometimes. It can be annoying but you have to relax and get on with enjoying life, good luck to those with it and don't waste money on so called cures, in my experience they don't work, just relax.
Anyone any feedback on custom made ear plugs? I have used Ultimate and not been too impressed. I find that when wearing a helmet the ears are moved to a different position than when the impressions were taken (helmet off) and that this breaks the seal leading to noise. I have tried two sets with the same problem - the material does not seem to be flexible enough. Are those 'do it yourself kits any good?
Den, I had exactly the same problem with ultimate ear plugs. I also tried some other custom plugs, same results. I therefore use the green disposable ones, which seem to do as good if not better job than the custom ones.
This isn't good news, it was a fear of mine, that the seal would be too rigid to allow any flexibility. Did they give you your money back? As if the seal is indeed 'leaky'. I will go back to foam plugs. I'm hoping to catch them at the show in London in February, they will hopefully have a deal on then.
I also got a different noise after tapping. It took my mind of the ringing though! likes yours it disappeared after a minute or two. Mine was caused by a F650 BMW I owned for maybe a year. I thought I was always riding in a cross wind until I realised the touring screen was actually aiming the wind at my head causing buffeting. after a trip to Germany even my eyes were affected. I loved having a single but not that one. I have both custom plugs and the cheap spongy ones. the custom plugs hurt my ears after any distance and I think the soft ones keep more noise out for me anyway.
No money back offered. Refitting offered but only if I could get to them at HQ or a show. Not possible so far. A pity as I seem to have awkwardly shaped ear canals that make correct fitting of foam plugs difficult and you can get through lots of them. Reusing them can lead to ear infections as mentioned before. If I had impressions made again I would see if it were possible to wear my helmet while they set.
I had some Ultimate Ear custom moulds for a few years but if they get slightly dislodged they wouldn't reseat of their own accord. Apparently the exact shape of your ear canal changes as you age (like everything else!) and after a few years they didn't seal at all. I then bought a multipack selection of different types of disposable foam earplugs and tried various out until I found that the Moldex Spark Plugs suit me perfectly - much more comfortable that the custom made ones and noise suppression that is at least as good. I bought a huge multipack of them on eBay which will last me for years. Although I guess they are supposed to be single use, I use them until the foam loses its suppleness. It's nice when a cheaper option turns out to be a better option... Nick
I buy in bulk. 200pair boxes of those yellow/pink ones. I re-use them all the time. No problem. I also sleep with them. I once had noisy neighbours (not anymore) and have gotten used to them over the years to the point where I now have to sleep with em in. A 200 pair box lasts me for yonks. £30 i think.
