help & guidance on a ducati please

  1. If I wasn't already sorted for a new 749 I'd be taking a punt on the black 999

  2. That is 2005 model. The 749/999 range was drastically improved including S models. Red Frame on red models, black box swingarm, lighter fairing and less vents either side of headlights. More bhp and deep sump motor and better electric are other improvements. That black bike has good history and lowish miles so good buy at right price, maybe 5k. I have a red version. Great bikes.

  3. I have a very nice low mileage 999S which I was going to advertise in a month

  4. The MCN review is complete tosh, viz "Occasionally, all that power can simply overhwhelm the old school trellis chassis." Yeah, right. I have never heard of anyone whose 999 frame started flexing on them. "All that power" is what, at the rear wheel? 125 bhp? It's pokey, but it's not an embarrassment of power. As for the 2 stars for equipment, how much more equipment is required? The 999 has Ducati's best ever dash (analogue tacho, but digital speedo).

I have had a 999 since 2006 and it is a fine bike - more than you need. I reckon there is a consensus of opinion on here which prefers the 749, especially the S version. I do not subscribe to that consensus. I found the 749 weak in the midrange compared to the 999 and just as thirsty. The 999 will get a real scoot on if you wind it up, but you can spend all day never exceeding 6500 rpm and make very rapid progress.

If I bought one from the Bay of Thieves, I would have it taken immediately to a top notch dealer for a look around and tweak. They are not cheap to service and need to be looked after by people who know what they are doing (pretty much the same as all Ducatis, but 4 valve water-cooled models are going to be more complicated).

Anyway, a 999 is a fine choice of bike. Looks cool and different and you're not going to be left behind by anything within the context of the road.

  5. how much will you be looking for ?

  6. may have a bid on this just checking before i do that there isnt a forum member already bidding on this ? please let me know as you have first dibs and i dont want to bid you up

  7. That black one is identical to mine. Best colour, good choice. And yes, the black swing arm bikes are the ones to have. You will then be able to add a few baubles as I have.

  8. Mate that's noble of you but all's fair in buying off the bay. Keep your cards close to your chest and go for it.

  9. As a matter of interest, what is that black 999 worth (were you to find one in a dealer's)?

  10. With eBay as a guide, between £4000 and £6500?

Pip beware of crap fairings. There's a few 749s being advertised at the moment with cheap Chinese fairing fitted, but no mention of it in the description, nor is it represented in the asking price.

  11. Wouldn't pay over 3500 personally. Its an old, and less popular, bike

  12. 5-6k. Varies quite a bit. Red sell easier. 05 models don't come up often especially in dealers. 848/1098 coming down to 6-7 now.

It will be advertised for £5500 with a reduction to allow the new owner to have it serviced with new belts. Belts are over 2 years now but all stamps are all Ducati Main Dealer Stamps with a major service inc valves August 2011 and only 1100 miles since. It has good history, very clean and has a single carbon seat unit to go with it if required. Mileage is circa 8K documented. Only selling as I bought a 999R and a 999R Fila.

  14. To clarify, mine is registered 2005 but is an 04 model registered on an 05 plate in the July. Be careful not to take partial info such as below as complete and correct. Mine is a deep sump model. The colour of the frame doesn't improve it, there are not 'drastically improved' anywhere - but maybe to someone who owns the latter ;-) and the engine power is different on standard to S to R models as well as model year changes. Do your own research, it is difficult to quantify all of them easily! Electric gremlins were sorted early I'm told (certainly prior to 2004 models) but I cannot quantify this info..........let me know if your interested in mine, if not it will be advertised as planned in a few weeks, cheers, Stu

  15. Dealers ask £6 to £7k from what I have seen recently with reasonably low to low mileage for 'Dark 999's

  16. Here's my 999S, it's the earlier model as Exige's bike.

I bought it in May 2012, with 17k on the clock for £4350
I'd have to say I think the black ones are hard to sell, like anything someone likes them but as said by someone else they're not so popular as red. The early bikes in 'S' spec came with the deepsump motor. The Ohlins forks, shock and steering damper are great, as is the wheels and termi bits. Mine has a few ducati performance parts, you'll spot the mirrors.
They're a bit of love/hate thing. When they first came out they were generally disliked, a little too modern and also a hard act to follow after the 916 family. Personally they don't look 'old' now. I think mine is unlikely to loose much if any value.
Belts are pricey, at around £140/pair from ducati. Fitting is easy enough. I do my own servicing. Just replaced the clutch, £60.
I have a number of bikes and as such the 999S doesn't fit into the classic status of the others yet, but I think it will in time. For now I'm just enjoying using it, in the knowledge it's not likely to cost me much in depreciation

  17. There's a nice low mileage 749 R up on eBay at the moment.

  18. That black 999 went for £4000, did you buy it?

    Someone got a deal there

  19. Good price, thought it would stretch to around £5k, mind you £5K is all I'm after for my low mileage S after initial bartering :)

  20. I think it is always a bit risky to sell a bike on ebay as a highest bidder auction.. Especially for a Ducati that isn't the most popular. You're depending on the two of the right people seeing the bike at auction time and deciding that's the bike they want, otherwise you're just getting your reserve price and not a penny more.
