Cars pay road tax based on the emissions. Motorcycles pay road tax based on their CC For most motorcycles, if they were cars, they'd pay no tax whatsoever... ... but as Motorcycle's are still taxed based on the old method of judging their CC, motorcycles over 600cc pay £78 a year. Here is a petition to change this .... Bring Motorcycle road tax inline with that of cars - e-petitions
Be careful what you wish for. Emissions based tax may turn out to be more expensive, especially for old, non-catalyst 30mpg v-twins running 5% CO at idle. Not that I approve of the levels of tax but I doubt the politicians would actually give us anything unless they can take it back (with interest) somewhere else...
I'd rather pay this than emission based tax... well, I wouldn't pay it as the SS would never get through an MOT!
Stop! As dukedesmo says, you may be shooting yourself in the foot here. Many bikes' emissions are far worse than cars, and you'd end up paying more, not less. It would also bring about emissions testing for bikes, which means no more Akras. Stick to the petitions that play the congestion card - there are plenty to choose from.
Not sure this is a good idea either, the Gov would ensure they weren't losing out and like fig said it could open up a can of worms you don't really want opened....
Again and again we see people setting up half-baked petitions proposing unfeasible measures, and we see other people misled into hastily signing them. The next time a petition appears, please just stop for a moment and think through the issue before taking action.
It's never going to happen until bike manufacturers, like car makers, produce emissions figures for their products. And even if it does come about, like for cars it won't be retrospective.
exactly Derek, they will come off worse and all new bikes will have massive cats to accommodate falling into legislation.
