I may have the Swing Arm form that 999r that has been posted as being broken. The guy is spanish, and using a little Google Translate to send him an email in his own language he seems like a nice chap. He offered me a decent price on the swinger too. I am googling and searched on here but couldn't find the answer to the following two questions: Will there be any problems fitting a 999 black swing arm to a 749S with a grey swing arm? Will a full termignoni system fit ok with the black swing arm? It's this system ... eBay Thanks!
hell are you sure about that Tom that swingarm looked worn away quite badly towards the rear right hand side back by the chain adjustment. Maybe not critical ,more cosmetic but it looked like youd have to build up the Ali to get it back to looking decent.
Ok just had another ganders at that 999R swingarm , think that's just dirt by the chain adjuster block , but hes defiantly lost the rear bobbin that will need drilling out carefully and then retapping , not the easiest thing to do because that bobbin was probably a stainless bolt , and its into ali . The black swinger should be a straight swap , but that Termi may foul if your 749 is deep sump.
He sent me some better pictures of the swinger from all angles and it looks like it could be repaired, however with delivery I think it will be cheaper to buy one in the UK. I have been hearing various things about the 749 in that they are all shallow sump. I don't know what is true any more. If there is a difference, then it is a shallow sump any way, as it is a 2004 grey swing arm model.
I bought one. I got it on eBay from the Netherlands. It was £350 with free delivery so it was around the same cost as the spanish chap was asking for, but it isn't damaged. We will see if there is a problem with the exhaust, I'm waiting for the seller to get back to me. This swinger
I paid about £300 for mine with carbon hugger and spindles etc off of the old forum. They do come up on ebay for circa £300. Very straight forward job to swap over but I assure you the exhaust for the grey swing models will not fit at all. I have a half system on mine and had to buy a link pipe but you may struggle more with that system
Are the spindles the same or will I need a new spindle too? Is the problem in the routing of the pipes?
I could be wrong but I thought the S models were deep sump? Spindle would be same , don't think Marchesini would have changed wheel spindle size from one model to next.
There's just so much confusion. Everyone thinks something different and I can't find a definitive answer. If the system came off of a deep sump bike then I won't have a problem any way? It's the swing arm that caused the problems, rather than anything else? So it could solve a problem rather than create one? Need to see what bike it came from. Hope fully a 749 2005 onwards!
In the interests of any one reading this thread in the future, the black swing arm version of the termignoni system has a 'banana' mid pipe. Its an odd shaped bit of tube to fit around the swing arm that sits behind the foot peg. There may be an issue with OE foot peg placement and the mid pipe. I'm not too sure right now.
I the spindles are the same but the sliders are different. You will also have to trim the fairing a little at the very back (Past the rear sets) as there is contact between the fairing and swing arm, although I'm sure that's only on left hand side. That chuffer will not fit with the newer swinger. Just to be clear, deep sump grey swing arm zorst wont fit deep sump black swing arm. Problem being the extra mass on the underside of the black swing arm
So what would the solution be? A newly fabricated link pipe on to go around the swinging arm? I've been looking all day and I'm still no clearer on what to do, other than your info that it won't fit. The shallow sump or grey swingarm full termi system could be made to fit with a custom link pipe? I will need to find some kind of solution to either use the half system I already have or to fit something different around the swing arm.

These aren't my photos but they do demonstrate the differences between the 54mm full system for grey and black swing arms. The newer type has a squashed section that routes between the foot peg and the swinging arm. It's definitely different but I'm not sure how much work will be needed to make it fit, if it will fit at all. A rubber mallet maybe the best option.
These arent the greatest photos , just whats available to me at the mo Tom but you might be able to see (if you can enlarge them) that this is a 58mm system (57.5 to be exact) . The pipe next to swinger (the banana shape on a termi) is the full bore i.e. 58mm ,you may not have any worries. I wouldn't guarantee it but thought it may help. Oh they are large enough ,result. I wasn't sure if it was 57 or 54 but I think the newer type 54mm came with a banana section as there are lots of threads about it on Ducati.ms. And I assumed the routing would've similar. Regardless, it's going on so a solution must be found
I have done this. i.e. 2004 model 749s with shallow sump engine with 05/06 black swinging arm and 57mm round exhaust. I had to have the exhaust modified quite a lot to gain enough clearance between the exhaust and sump(it was touching and I didn't want it to cook the big end bearing) and then to get around the "broader" arm. I read alot of conflicting stories myself and most recently on this forum a fella did it with an oval shape exhaust and didn't have to make any changes. My only conclusion is that not all exhausts are equal and if I could I would do it again - its not that hard to make an exhaust fit and its less hassle than selling your bike and buying one you like the look of
Your exhaust was a 57mm whereas I was going to fit a 54mm. I think the trouble comes from the 57mm rather than the 54mm.
