Ninnnnne Ninnnnne !! 999s v 848

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Dubs, Jan 10, 2014.

  1. I'm slurprised how many of you guys are pro 999. I thought it would get a load of stick. My 999 is mine until I can't get my leg over it, but if I was to change before then, a 848 EC would tempt me. I haven't ridden an 848 and won't try one because I think I've got the best Ducati for me and don't want to shatter that illusion. I liked the 999 when it was released but wasn't keen on the higher vents by the lights, I thought they looked a bit Japanesey design. So when it was updated in 05 I was well happy, and the red frame gave it class too. I like how they are unique from any angle. A 749S would have been the sensible option but with Bayliss (Xerox 999 best looking race ducati ever) doing the biz for a 3rd championship it had to be a 999. Doesn't get used to its potential, mainly touring and scaring the shit out of myself a couple of times a month. Most comfy bike I've owned for long fast rides, the flat wide seat fits my arse a treat. gf's ok with the pillion too.

  2. Only got pictures of my 9R all my pre 2010 pics went with the theft of my last laptop . Got a new laptop out of it though .

Only the 2004 model 749R had a carbon fairing the rest are plastic . All 999R got carbon fairing . Only R to come with a carbon seat unit was the 2004 749R . Mines carbon but recently added .

  3. Ah the 749R myths………..my 2003 999R had a carbon seat unit!

  4. My 2004 749R never had a carbon seat unit (it has now though!).

  5. Well the only part on my bike that was plastic was the seat unit . when I purchased it I was told by the shop that I bought my bike from that the only bike that had a carbon seat unit from new was the 2004 749R . When I purchased my carbon seat unit and looked at the sticker it says 2004 on the underside . Not seen many carbon seats on 7/9Rs so I thought it was true.

  6. make your mind up……post 42 you say the only R to come with a carbon seat unit was the 749R……….

  7. Yep thats what I said and thats what I think is correct . The only models I have seen fitted with a carbon seat are 04 749R New . I have seen others but they were fitted aftermarket . As is mine .

  8. Both my 999R and 999R Fila from 2003 have Carbon Seat Units from new.

  9. I must have been wrong then but the 04 749R has a different part number .

The carbon seat must have stopped after 04 then . I stand corrected.

  10. in this forum you will off course end up being adviced to get the 999  ask the same question in the 848 forum and you might get a different answer.

I ride a 999s trackbike (until the engine exploded last year...) and I ride with a mate who has a 999 trackbike and a 848 streetbike. We were discussing exactly this "848 or 999" this weekend while drinking a few beer (!) and planning the '14 trackday season and he is selling his 999 to use the 848 as trackbike. He says that the 848 is way smoother to ride, has less weight (important on the track) and is easier to ride generally than the 9. I would add that the 848 has wetclutch (which I would prefer for the street, I don't get the fascination of that horrible noise) and has a slightly improved riding position for the street (still terrible but improved...).

Finally it is one engine generation newer and probably (hopefully) a bit more solidly built. I have seen and heard of quite a lot of duc's trashing the engine on the tracks but I must admit that I have seen just as many 1098/1198 going south as 999. The lack of 848 engine crashes is probably because there is more 1098/1198 than 848 on the tracks because the 848 doesn't fit in any racing class.

  11. 848 challenge cup...there are loads out there.

lighter, faster, less torque more power with just a little work, more reliable..everyone a winner

  12. Surprised to read this, you mocked me for taking my bike to a dealer for servicing as in your mind they do nothing and just hand over a bill, did the dealer you trust rob your carbon seat ? ;)

  13. No, the '04 749r didn't come with a carbon seat unit. I recall that the 999r did, but I think it was only the very early models, or the Fila.

  14. I mocked you . I think you ought to think before you write anything I have never mocked anyone on this site You on the other hand have a view that if it isnt done like you do then its not right.

You show the community where I mocked you or keep your opinions to yourself.
