Hi All Does anyone have any recommendations in terms of luggage options for an 848/1098? I have tended to travel with a back pack in the past but I have a feeling that a good size tank bag would be a better option in terms of comfort.
I have got the ventura luggage system fitted to my 848. Doddle to fit and you can carry loads! Did a weekends camping with it at Brands last year without any dramas! !
Ali, I have the side bars for a ventura sat in my garage for an 848...find out what they are retail you can have for half the cost. Then you just need the upper bits
i got the ventura rack, not used it yet but hopefully soon, i just need a bag to affix to it also got the kriega set-up, us20, 10, 5 and a rucksack too, but sometimes find these aggravating getting them on and off with the straps, handy for a light weekend away, worries me if the tail gets scratched, kriega also do the tank bra thing so you could get a bit on your tank if needed i got the DP tankbag, not tried it yet either, the problem with sports bikes and tank bags it might effect your reach? (£30 on ebay...) come and have a look in the garage if your passing though
Not done it yet with my 1198 but on my r1 I bought a pillion seat then drilled it to suit my givi top box base that I use on my scooter. Fitted a treat and completely waterproof with the added bonus that it can be removed easily and with it being on the pillion seat there doesn't feel like any extra weight and you can still filter through traffic easily.
I have a full set of soft rear oxford panniers. To be honest, I usually just use a rucksack now. I can't be arsed with the bungees etc and do you not need to remove a tank bag each time you fill up? I think my 1098 had the ventura fitted at some point as it had elongated fasteners holding the cans on, never tried one though. Travelling round Europe I just wash my socks and undies in the shower, bit like grape treading lol!
When I've needed a lot of luggage space, I used my Kriega US 20 on the back and wore by R35 backpack. The US20 suited the bike perfectly and was nop bother at all. I've got the Tank harness and a US10 too but I don't really like using tankbags and with the Corse tank being unpainted I'm scared of scratching it. The best bit about the Kriega stuff is that it's fully removable in seconds so once you don't need the gear the bike is totally luggage free in no time. The Kriega stuff isn't cheap but you'll never need to replace it and it works brilliantly. Andy
I wouldnt bother with a tank bag - i think they cause obstruction and are a distraction - probably applicable to sportsbieks only (?). For the 848 I have a ventura rack but aint fitted it yet. Used Kriega luggage last year to Germany. Fine, great gear, solid & secure. You can fit A LOT into a 20 + 10 ltr bag. See below: http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f8/touring-panniers-advice-please-14141/
Thanks for everyone's input on this. The main distance travelling I'll be doing is for trackdays. As I dont have a van/trailer I'll need to carry everything on the bike I need for a couple of days away including some basic tools/tapes etc. Ive looked into the Ventura systems but don't fancy having to remove the rack and reinstall it all the time. Im thinking tankbag/tail pack/rucksack options. I appreciate that a tank bag may get in the way (and I have the aluminium tank so a magnetic one won't work let alone worrying about scratching it) and a rucksack isn't an ideal option although a purpose made one may work (Kreiga etc) subject to being able to lift/drop a be-helmeted head. Im going to look into the Kreiga stuff and see if I can track down some second hand stuff on fleabay if its OK. Thanks again Ali
Buy new, it is not much difference in price and you get to cover them in shit first! And you can leave the side rails on, not that noticable, with a ventura rack. Or do as suggested and bolt a top box on a spare seat
I'm amazed at the price 2nd hand Kreiga stuff goes for on eBay! There's virtually no difference in price as you say bradders. I'll be going for the combo tail pack option I think. 20 litre + 10 litre. Good and flexible for shorter journeys and it's right out of the way. Thanks for everyone's help again Ali
you can always pop over and play with Martins we might be up the Hilltop Sunday I use a 20 with a 10 either side - less wobbly that a 20 with a 10 on top! We have two of their rucksacks to - great with the water pack for those hot European trips
It's going to be sunny but only 8 degrees - I may brave the five miles to the cafe so long as there's a breakfast waiting !
