Happy New Year everyone. Hope your days are filled with sunshine, clear roads and extensive track time! So, to keep me sane whilst the builders are busy destroying my house, I am researching and ordering all the garage stuff I will need for once the garage is complete. Space is limited, which is a bit of an issue, but I have bought the ramp already (Probike floor recessed) - which is great for saving space when not in use. But the other things that would be really useful would be tyre changing equipment and a compressor. Tyre changing simply because having to drive loose wheels to the shop the entire time to do swaps is a pain and not convenient for work, as I can't do that in an evening but having my own tyre changing kit would be a godsend. So, any advice on those two items? 1. Compressor - what am I looking for here? There are small ones that run up to 116psi, but not huge volume. I need electric feed, but what else am I looking for? If I am running hydraulic tyre changer etc, what will I need? 2. Tyre changing - Probike do some nice kit, but they are quite dear and quite large. Their smallest pneumatic changer is very nice, but I will be losing quite a bit of space still. What about those Sealey type manual changers? Any use? I know I also need a bench mounted balancer, but that's easy enough and they are cheap. Anything else I am missing? (I am also collecting specific tools for the bikes as I go, as that's also a pain to collect and one of the reasons the bikes end up in the dealership. Even getting Ohlins tools to change springs et al is a pain unless you are trade....). if anyone has an intro or can help here that would be great..... Thanks! Am hoping this research will deflect my attention from the mudbath all round my house that is inevitable during a large construction job in this weather!
there is an advert for geg at the bottom of this page, try them a lot of the big stuff in my workshop comes from them. good prices ok stuff.
With compressors CFM (flow) is more important than psi - check the CFM the tools you wish to use require, and ensure the compressor can deliver it.
Anyone know how much pressure and volume I need to seat tyres when I have changed them? I am looking at Machine Mart website and there are loads, but I have little idea what I need. I only want it to be able to seat tyres after changing, and blow clean things. Any clues please?! Garage almost done - finished by Weds this week - hooray!
Very funny sir. Just tired of running around getting tyres changed, so going to invest in manual tyre changing kit, but need a compressor. I know nothing whatsoever about them!
Ian, I use a BSB tyre tech to change mine. He's just moved to Thames Ditton and collects if it's easy for him. There's a guy round the corner from us who has a carpet business and raced in the 848 challenge last year. Dave (tyre man) maintained his bike in addition to the BSB work. A lot less hassle than getting your own tyre rig. IMHO.
A mate of mine has a Sealy manual tyre changing rig and seems to do OK - though I've never seen him do it myself. I'll ask him about it if I see him this week.
Means you can also do trackside, is so inclined, and there is a big queue for tyre bloke . Just be prepared for 'mates' to start conversations with...'you still got that tyre changing stuff?'
