Going skiing... First time advice needed

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Phill, Jan 21, 2014.

  1. Flying into Spain and driving back into France early Feb.
So I need tips (not on my driving lol)
I don't want to spend a lot of money on ski gear as I may never go again.
Is every skiier picture perfect posers like some sports bike riders or can I get away with an old 90s ski jacket hiding in a box in the loft ?
    Help needed lol

I hope it's more of a piss up than anything

  2. I'd hope for the latter too.

I believe El T is always on the piste.

  3. Most skiers on the slopes are crap, don't worry about not looking the part.

    It is great fun.

The most important factor in starting skiing is comfortable boots, everything else comes second. So if possible buy a pair and have them properly fitted by a specialist who knows WTF they are doing. If you can't run to buying a pair pay extra to get a higher quality boot but not a high performance boot, they are too stiff for a beginner. If they hurt aftre the first day take them back to the shop and get a different pair. They should be a very snug fit, your heel should stay planted and there should be no obvious pressure points.

    Get lessons.

Don't push too hard too soon. Get the basics sorted on the greens and easy blues and concentrate on doing things with style to avoid bad habits. Get fit before you go.

Above all else enjoy it. It really is great fun.

Where are you going and when ?

  4. Buy two pairs of quaility ski socks, wear one with the other in the wash.

I prefer to wear a couple of base layers and a shell with a gillet under the shell on cold days.

If you are not comfortable it will be less enjoyable.

Don't ski when pissed and stay hydrated. Take a break if tired and eat the occasional high energy bar to maintain energy levels.

  5. Johnv speaks sense

  6. The thing about skiing is it's ghey!

Do boarding instead. And johnv speaks sense. Get/hire good comfortable boots first and foremost. Then use layers as has been said. Nowt so horrible as being cold and miserable.

  7. i have found a high percentage of skiers to be rent boys, go boarding. and don't forget yer insurance.

  8. Why were you looking for rent boys??

  9. i was horny

  10. It's a slippery slope :frown:

  11. its been said some go just for the chalet girls

I borrowed / got given a load of gear for my first foray - sometimes you really are just are too old to learn, went once more - fekin hate it

    food was good though :upyeah:

  12. boarding has got a bit of a steeper learning curve but once youv got it its superb. my advise when learning snowboarding lie facing the slope and push your self up instead faceing away and trying to pull your self up.

  13. Skiing: brilliant fun. The secret to learning is to fall over a lot. Those who are scared to be continually on their arses never make any progress.

Part of the fun is all the things that surround skiing like the views, the sun, the fir trees, the silence, glühwein, fondue etc.

But as you are going to be on your arse in the snow all day, you don't want to be wearing jeans or you will be wet and miserable. You don't need to be wearing the height of fashion. Don't buy boots and skis - hire them. Just find out which is the most competent shop in your resort. They spend all day every day fitting people for boots so you should be fine.

  14. skiing...meh...cold, snow and icey. brrrr...sod that. Gimme a sunny beach, a warm sea, a beer, my sunglasses and all the breasts I can view.

  15. Try arranging that in a British winter.

  16. I remember about 25 years ago skiing into a mountain restaurant near Suaze D'Oulx on a perfect bluebird day.......there were about six girls laid on the decking on deck chairs in their bikinis. It doesn't get better than that! Fact.

  17. Wear a helmet. Get the best insurance you can afford then go for it. If I had to stop bike riding I'd move to the snow fields and ski all day long till my legs fell off. Most fun I've ever had apart from biking on this planet. Other planets are available!
DO NOT ski drunk. Other European ski peeps will sue you for every penny if you run over their ski/board/leg/head.

  18. If they had no bikinis on at all then that would be much better so in fact you are wrong. Fact!. Nerny.

25yrs ago. I'm surprised your memory is still intact Gramps.

  19. It's one in the "bank"

  20. I use these for trackdays, they do winter sports cover also.
