Just about to jump into the mysterious Ducati pool!

  1. Hi all
been riding for years and last two bilkes were a Triumph Daytona 675 and a Speed Triple.

I have stayed away from Ducati having been frightened by tales of lumpy engines in traffic, mysterious stalls, electrical problems and £££ repair bills when things go wrong.

Also all those numbers confused me , 748, 749 848 1098 - flummoxed, gouldnt tell an R from an S

Got to borrow a mates Monster for the weekend and I'm hooked.

Thinking I'd like to get a 748 or 749... possibly a 916/ 998 or 999 although the smaller capacity would do me for both performance and wallet .

MCN reviews have me in a spin - was the 748 and 749 so much worse than their bigger brothers?...

Oh and something controverstial -I like the 999 look (ducks)

  3. Welcome, If you like the looks of the 999 then get a test ride on the 999 or 749 both are a bit more refined than the earlier versions ie 748 916. There all great bikes.

  8. Hello Moo

749/999 brilliant bikes, try to get 05 model, red frame, black wheels, black box swingarm, facelift fairing and more bhp. 999 base or 749S are good.

  10. To get knowledge of what bike is what and which has got what Ian Falloons 'The Ducati Story' has all facts and figures with no bull and is also interesting combining racing history and production models. 4th edition covers 999 to end of production.

  11. Hi and welcome.
Having been a jap bike owner all the time i was reluctant to jump ship to a Ducati, took
a 748 out for a test ride about a year and a half ago and couldn't wait to give the keys back, it was an itch i had too scratch and i didn't like it, went no same route as i was use to ridding my jap bikes, comparing it all the time i was out half hour, this time took it for 2hrs different roads rebooted my brain and road it like you should ride a Ducati (completely different to jap bikes) and feel in love with it after 20mins, came back with the biggest smile no my face since i bought the Porsche, the sales man knew i was going to buy it there and then and i did. i love it 749 07plate 4,000 miles on clock i can't keep my hands off it.
    Guvs.

  12. Hey thanks for that all gives me the confidence to go ahead with it now, gotta start trawling for that 749!

  13. hi there i had the 999s 06 plate my son had 749 so got to compare 999 gives that extra bit and is even more a lazy ride
not till you look at speedo do you realise speed and how fast you get there. pull all day.

  14. Welcome.

Ignore the MCN reviews which are pants - especially on the 999.

The 749/999 are more comfortable than the 748/916 et al.
They are probably more reliable too - although my 916 was totally reliable, and my 999 has been too.

All the bigger motors are lazier than their smaller siblings. The fuel consumption is about the same. The bigger motors are unsurprisingly faster in roll on mode - probably a bit more top end too.

The later 999's are better, I reckon, than the earlier grey swingarm models.
If you like the looks, try them. I am still enamoured with my 999, which is a lot of bike, after nearly 8 years (can it be that long already???).

Stay away from alarms if you don't want starting problems.

    Good luck, Jim.

  15. Howdy Dave....

    welcome !

And yes, there is a battle here on the 999 and how beautifuly stunning and timeless it is..:biggrin:Im with you on that one

  17. Welcome to the forum

  18. There's no battle, it is!! Well mine is anyway.....

  19. hi I rode 675 Daytona 675 what a good bike it is but the bikes before that 900ss and 916 biposto were a better bike to ride for me I don't think you will regret it if you change to ducati.

  20. I too think the 999 is underrated. I prefer it to the 916 family.
Let us know how you get on.
