Engine oil group buy and please post any engine oil related advice / experiences here

  1. Well you'd expect mechanical sympathy from an Android

Just read the details in that ebay auction for the 10w40.........looks to me like a copy and paste from the Shell promo for the oil and an advisory that there is the 15w50 version available - rather than the ebay seller offering it as an alternative for the price (if it looks too good.....;-)
Messaged them anyway on the off chance:

  2. Each to their own i guess but i'm quite happy to take advice from the best mechanics who take engines part on a regular basis and so pay the extra £20 or so per oil change to buy the best protection available.

Its barely even one tank of fuel you are saving by buying a cheaper brand.

  3. I agree.....each to their own :D

.....although I wouldn't refer to the likes of Shell Advance Ultra as a 'cheaper brand' - nothing to do with brand but as it's a totally different specification class just costs less than specialist oils like Motul 300V.

  4. If it's wet, brown and slippery, stick it in!

  5. I need to do mine, I have some Ultra 10-40 that i will use , Does that service reminder still come up on the dash.. I have done 20000 miles!

  6. Yes the service reminder will come up at the allotted time/mileage....options:
    # speak to Dealer - some will clear for a few quid others charge a fair whack!
    # speak to Chris at CJS.....obviously a charge there also
    # the Terchnoresearch diagnostic/service tool.......although this function (and some others) will only be active with a forthcoming software/firmware update (will update the thread on the 'tool' soon......trying to find out what's going on!)

Response from ebay seller re auction mentioned earlier:
....at the equivalent of £58 and £50!! (I said my deal of £30 for 4 litres was good!! - post1;-)

....we're not interested in your sexual preferences here!

What a pain in the arse!

Yep it sure is!!! The cheapest I can find is £11.22 +pp per litre.

  9. I only use motul factory line 15-50.

I find it unbelievable - we spend a fortune on bikes - carbon bits here and there and we try to save money on oil and tyres?

If you did some research on "shell ultra" - you'll find its not really fully synthetic. The Motul factory line is double ester which is the best you can buy. I was advised that a prime reason the rockers on the 748/996 series have issues is due to the oil - mainly 10-40 which is not thick enough.

I change my oil on road bikes atleast twice a year and on my race bikes - every 2 race meetings. Cheaper to change oil then have an engine go.

If you change oil once a year - does 20quid really matter?

  10. I would certainly pay an extra £20 if there was a explainable reason why we would all benefit from using it over the recommended. I didn't pay a fortune or have any carbon parts, so perhaps I am the wrong demographic to answer :)

  11. Go ask JHP or Cornerspeed.

  12. +1

Apparently our engines should go round the clock twice if looked after with the recommended oil + filter changed regularly. What is to be gained by using a higher spec. more expensive oil than necessary?

Most modern engines (car or bike) outlast the rest of the vehicle these days. A combination of materials and design as well as massively improved oils - even the basic brands are far superior to the best of a few years ago.

  13. If you know where to look, you can get 4L of motul factory 300v 15/50 for 36gbp delivered. Pop down to your ducati dealer - enjoy the ride and pick up a filter and crush washer - job done.

I'm no expert on oil, but do maybe 15+ changes a year on my bikes if not more.
    Better oil lasts longer.

At the end of the day, oil breaks down and becomes thinner and thinner and gets contaminated with other items during its use. Fully synthetic lasts better.

The reality is frequent changes are better than 1 change with a better oil. Changing your oil 4 times ayear with semi synthetic is probably better than changing just once with fully syn.

However, since the topic is arising from the usual oil change annually, i would put the best oil possible inside.

Btw, JHP uses Motul 300V 15-50.

  14. So, come on then, spill.

    Where?

  15. Why not.....if either have the time/inclination to comment I for one would be interested to hear their views, or from anyone else in the trade for that matter.
I've dropped Neil an email but I don't think I know anyone at JHP (or whether anyone from JHP is a member here) so maybe someone who does will do the honours please ;-)

  16. The oil debate has always been a fruity one :) I used Shell for a good few years, and have now been using Motul for the last 4 years, so have experience of both. Availability/commercial reasons were my main reason for switching as both product are worthy of being poured into the sump of a Ducati.
For my main service oil, grade wise, I used 15w/50 Shell for several reasons, mainly IMO that it's a better oil for the older desmo Quattro engines rockers and also offers better stability at higher temps. This was despite the recommended grade back then being 10w/40....

My main service oil now is Motul 7100 with 300V offered as an upgrade or used specifically in Panigale or DD16. I'm using 15w/50 in both flavours, but did use 7100 10w/60 for some time with no ill effects.

10w/40 or 15w/50 are both well inside specs for the UK as is the 10w/60 and Afaik, there are no issues with Ducati using any. The same goes for brand. Sponsorship obviously plays a part in what sticker is placed on the clutch cover, but no matter what oil you use then as long as it meets the required standards, then it should be fine.

    Hope that helps.........

  17. Thanks for your input Neil.....yes that helps, appreciated :D

  18. great to hear Nelly, thanks for taking the time to comment :upyeah:

Etherion, as far as I recall the flakey rockers on 748 / 996 was not oil related. The rockers went through several updates, and also manufacturers. One version of these from a specific manufacturer had an issue with the plating on the contact surface seperating and flaking off. Replacing with the later (or indeed earlier) versions of the rockers is the solution.

I had a pair of rockers and a cam need replacing on my ST4S at 24k miles, and that was serviced with shell oils every 3k miles (yes I did mid term oil changes too). After warranty expired I swapped to using Motul as that is what my mechanic uses in his race bikes.
I'm using shell in my Mts12, simply because that is what the dealer is using & putting in

  19. I'm using Rock Oil Synthesis 4 Racing 15/50 Fully Synthetic 4 Stroke Oil - 4 Litres £38.62 from Introbikes. Had the choice between Shell or Rock Oil at the 600 mile service so choose Rock Oil for price. Bike will be dealer serviced (Snell) but I will change the oil myself at halfway point. Personally I think all modern oils of correct specification are much the same. Any good make will be perfectly good. However changing more frequently than required will probably benefit the engine more than anything else. However oil is bit like tyres we all have a preference but in the end they all work.

  20. I had my bike serviced yesterday at MotoRapido, they used Motul 7100 10W-40, 4.25 Litres priced at £11.85 per litre.
