Ah well - most Ebay ads are dreadfully written, not just spelling and grammar but using phases like, "Rare bike" "Good investment" "Sought after by the Latte drinking crowd" "Rare opportunity" "Future classic" All these things you probably knew already (or would dispute) or things that anyone with any sense would see as unsubtle codified messages for "I want a lot of money for it"
'Rare' is the one word that really annoys me in eBay ads. If the item you want to sell really is rare, then the type of person that would pay top dollar for it already knows how rare it is and doesn't need to be told. If it isn't rare then you just appear to be a fool and that's it.
The other one to watch is 'fast appreciating asset'.If that were true the seller would be better off taking a low interest rate loan to tide him over whilst his asset appreciates. With a few exceptions, what is appreciating today is not wanted tomorrow!
Not wanted sums up the GT - they just weren't popular. Not until America invented the cafe racer, anyway.
To think that I sold a lovely Classic s about 2 years ago and a lovely black GT1000 about 18 months agne sold because it was to uncomfortable for me,and the other because I wanted something more exciting.Nowt as queer as folk,eh.And i'm not even from up north.
S'right Tom - It's like going up to a woman and saying "I'm dead attractive me!" - You are either attractive in her eyes or not - and saying so makes you less attractive!
I bought my GT1000 after spotting & test riding a 2nd hand bike I could afford at Italia Moto. John Hackett (JHP) had waxed lyrical to me about the GT being a really nice bike to ride - and he didn't have one in the showroom. I 'clicked' with the GT immediately, & still enjoy every ride on it. That's why mine's not for sale. I would like to buy something else to accompany the GT, just need to save some beer vouchers....
Regarding the GT on ebay, I would be wary as he says its in standard unmolested condition......but the rear mudguard is off of an SC not a GT
Good point Rikkd, the mirrors & fluid reservoirs are not standard either. The bike also has a Ducati centre stand, that was an option that went out of production in 2009.
Well spotted! Nothing undermines your confidence like a seller saying something that is patently untrue - what else is he hiding? It would be walk-away time for me on this one (if I was in the market of course). A silly example from a very long time ago - at a car boot sale I spotted a RAF uniform that had strange gilt buttons on it.. I immediately recognised the phony crest as being from a Woolworths school blazer from the mid sixties. I asked the dapper elderly vendor and he said; "Oh I was in a Mosquito Squadron seconded to the Saudi Arabian Air Force - that was the Sheik's personal coat of arms!" Yea right - Woolworths "Winfield" coat of arms more like! Walk away time...
I think the whole SportClassic market is getting out of control, which is probably good news if you have one ! take this for example: I printed this out from ebay back end of last year, it sold for £7700 and needed shipping back from France, it was a UK model. One photo shows with Ohlins the other without. At least he hasn't had the brass neck to put it back on ebay for £12k like some dealers would. Used 2007 Ducati Other Models for sale in Cheshire | Pistonheads
Very true Tric ...£12k is a bit steep and he's cutting corners by using Pistonheads to advertise. I just thought of another advert phrase that I find irritating. "Bargain"... Just saw this and the seller is asking top dollar for this bike... "At this price it is a bargain, current sportsbikes have gone up and up in price so get yourself a deal. " Really??? Well as the buyer I thought I would be the judge of a bargain thanks! Also where is the bargain if your asking for the very top of the price range? Swipe a grand off and then call it a bargain thanks! and as for current sportsbikes - well your bike stopped being current in 2006 (it's a 999) and do you mean ALL current sports bikes? Well I must get myself down to the Suzuki dealer, buy a brand new Gixxer and watch it go up in value! Who are these people??? At least if you were interested in buying you could be forearmed in the sure knowledge that the seller was a dribbling idiot!
I wonder if this one will be snapped up by a dealer ...... watch this space ( well ebay anyway ). Ducati Sport Classic 1000 | eBay
