999 wheels in a ss?

  1. I'm weighing up my options on fitting a set of either 749/999 wheels to my 750 carb ss. The front I've got sorted, but as for the rear is there anything stopping me from doing this?
    anyone here done it before?

    cheers

  2. Axle diameter is a lot bigger so bearings and spacers for starters.

  3. I don't mind stuff like that to much, just as long as it's not impossible to do

  4. I can take some measurements and pics of my 999 if it'll help. There are spacers either side of 999 wheel which will give you scope to adjust.

  5. That would be sweet, cheers pal

  6. I'm pretty sure the hub is wider so won't fit in the swingarm.

  7. also get the radius of the tyre as well as the width as you'll probably find that you can't get a hugger on there. It's quite a tight package in the stock swingarm. It's not impossible but I think you might be surprised at how cosy everything is.

try posting on the 999 forum to see if someone can give you the vital measurements.

  8. Photos when done please, if you get that far that is, somthing I've thought about, as my front wheel has a ding in it.

  9. I think this is why the hub is wider?

I run a 180 rear tyre on a Monster (same wheel & sprocket carrier as SS) and the chain touches the side of the tyre as it 'flexes' because it is so close (Monster was designed for a 170).

As the 999 was designed for a 190 tyre plus uses a thicker (525) chain with the required clearance, then the sprocket needs to sit further away from the wheel/tyre and so the hub is wider to allow this, therein lies the problem because the SS swingarm isn't wide enough internally to accommodate the 999 wheel (and if it was the sprockets probably wouldn't line up either).

Of course I could be talking bollocks but I'm pretty certain it's something like that...

  10. Tim, check your alignment, I run a 180 on both my monster and ss and neither rub the chain The monster rear end is a direct descendant from the 888 which did run the 180 in its last forms. As for the bigger axle that is sorted quite easy with spacers so unless the hub is massively different in width I cannot see a problem.
I have fitted the later ss 5 spokes to an early swingarm and noticed there were minor differences in widths, this was fixed by narrowing the sprocket carrier so the chain runs closer to the tyre and I still have clearance.
I would be interested in the outcome of this as its something I would like to do as the 999 wheels are lighter.

  11. I squeezed a 190 tyre on my Monsters rear rim:

All without rubbing I suppose it just depends what make the tyre is.

  12. I was toying with the idea of going balls deep and using a 999 swingarm also, solves one problem but creates another.
just need to figure out the lesser of 2 evils

  13. You will need 999 shock and be welding upper mounts to frame and all sorts to do that. 999 arm has rising rate linkage underneath with ride height adjuster going to a rocker at top.

  14. The great wheel debate continues ;)
