Ground Anchor - where to route chain through a 1098?

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Snips, Feb 2, 2014.

  1. Hi,

I'm fitting a Torc ground anchor in preparation for the delivery of my 1098.

In order to know where to best place the anchor on the garage floor, I need a rough idea of where I'm going to route the chain linking the bike to the anchor through the bike.

The back wheel would be simplest, but that's not too secure, as thieves could just remove the back wheel.

Is there a good place to thread a thick chain on a 1098 frame?

    Thanks.

  2. It obviously depends on chain length. I secure rear wheel and frame on seperate chains and anchors.

My advice is to look long and hard at your bike in its resting place and place ground anchor(s) accordingly. Ideally sink them into the conrete. The bolt down ones are shite. I had a bike nicked from my garage. I had rawl bolted the anchor down but the little rascals had somehow popped them out the ground like carrots. The bolts had actually snapped in place so were fitted well enough.

Never leave excess chain or padlock on the ground. Its easy to attack when laid on conrete. Your common smackhead scrote aint gonna nick your bike. If anyone comes after it It'll be tooled up pro's. When building your defences bear this in mind and make sure the cunts have to work hard with tooling to get it... And get a big horrible dog if its practicle...

  3. Did you buy the anchor from pragmasis? They have a few options. Firstly, it doesn't matter about the anchor if your chain is crap as they will just crop it n secondsf if anchored.

You have two good options, both involve their anti pinch pin which would either pass through the rear wheel spindle or the frame. You need to check on their website (security for bikes) as I know the 848 spindle is too narrow in the centre to allow the pin to pass through. There are some images on here of this as several of us use their excellent products.

If it won't fit your spindle then you need to go for the longest security pin and it passes through the offside footrest and comes out through the main frame triangle. Again, worth checking with a broom handle as I don't have the same bike but you should be good.

I added a small bit of sponge under the pin to prevent frame damage and its worked very well.

The 16mm chain is the best option here as its quite important to keep the weight down a bit.

I spent a couple of hours with steve (the owner) and this was the best option we found. The min chain length was 1.1m but I went for the 1.2 which gives me a little flexibility.

The anchor goes under the bike where its hidden.

    Hope this helps.

  4. As JC says the stuff on Pragmasis looks good.

  5. Thanks for the detailed replies, appreciated.

Yep, I bought a Pragmasis Torc 2 ground anchor with the resin installation kit. I was looking at the Pragmasis chains, and I'll now look at the anti-pinch kits you mention (don't think I can use one on rear axle as I'll be keeping the bike on a rear paddock stand, but I should be able to use on frame as JC749 suggests)

I've been super impressed by the service from Steve (he mailed me to say the kit would be 'delayed' as he couldn't despatch it until following day!), and the quality and attention to detail of the whole kit is superb :upyeah:

  6. Using a stand wont effect anything, you just need a longer chain. The 1.5m will be more than long enough for the frame if on a stand as I think the 1.2 may be a bit short but I may be wrong. To be honest, if the back is only an inch or two in the air the 1.2 should be fine but dont quote me.

Having a chain that is too long is ok as you simply roll the sleeve back and put the pin through the next link to keep it tight.

If you put the chain through the wheels it is very hard doing it without causing damage and keeping it off the ground. You can protect areas with sponges etc but you only need to drop it once and you wont believe the damage as it really is heavy and the links have an un-natural ability to cause damage an pinch fingers!

Steve spent some time with me exploring a few options with both the 19 & 16mm chains and I can honestly say the 19 is a pain in the ass to use if putting it through a wheel.

If you are thinking of putting the chain through the frame...... DONT - TRUST ME!

This is why the pin is so good and you have to be very careful using this too as it is a solid bit of metal and add the weight of a big chain to the end and its a real weapon.

There are other options such as using a shorter length of chain and using a short pin through the side of the frame etc, just depends on what you want.

I mentioned to Steve that its a shame that they dont make a U shaped anti pinch pin as it would be ideal for putting through frame tubes, wheel spokes, forks, etc, etc.

As I previously mentioned, there are many options but when you get one or start experimenting with the chains on your bike you start seeing the limitations due to the physical size and weight of the things.

I too went for the chemical resin kit and found it pretty cool to install. If you dont have a Professional SDS drill, you will need one to drill the holes. I think it cost me about 40 quid inc a transformer and new drill bit from HSS hire. Drill small pilot holes first or you will be drilling holes everywhere.

Whatever you get, your in the right place.

  7. Have you seen those battery operated angle grinders .

  8. Yep.

    And.......

  9. Again, thanks for the detailed reply, but please could you clarify - are you saying I can still use the pinch pin even with a SSS rear paddock stand?

I understood the pin goes through the axle, where the stand peg would be when it's on the stand.

From your advice, it doesn't sound like putting chain around frame or wheels is a good idea.

  10. It takes about 15 seconds to cut the chain off.

  11. I pass mine through the frames of my 918 and 1198.

I know a dedicated theif will remove it quickly. Especially as theres all the tools he needs in the garage to do it. I have 3 locks on garage. once central and 1 each on bottom corners. Then I park my Saab right up to the door. This has a gearbox lock and cant be moved without the key or a lifter. Oh and I have a rather loud occ sensing alarm. I also have nosey neighbours and we all look out for each others garages and homes.

Didnt stop some cunt running a key down the side of Lord Percy my VW camper. Still, he needs a new suit anyway.

  12. So what?? Its still a physical obstacle said thieving cunts have to get past... We must apply the 'onion' theory to security. The more layers the better. For instance, locked garage, live alarm system, fuckin big orrible dog, fuckin big orrible chains anchoring bike, difficult access etc...
The harder you make the job for them the more likely they are to look elswhere.

  13. Foscam is a good security measure . It sends you an email straight away with hundreds of photos of intruders and you can even talk through it to let them know of impending big bloke coming to break their bones when they are found . If I open my garage without switching it off I get an Email within 10 seconds . I can look at the inside of my garage from anywhere though my iphone .

In fact here it is right now.

  15. Bought mine from amazon . You need to marry it to your router with your IP address enter your Email address and away you go. theres an app to get it on your phone . I have looked at my garage whilst in france . It has infra red for if lights are off but you can set it up to switch them on remotely .
