Since returning to the ducati fold with the 1098 I've not been able to shake the idea of building a ducati ss/monster based cafe racer. So after a fair bit of thought I decided a ss was the way forward, for me the frame suits the look better, more parallel to the ground unlike the monster. the end result I've not set in stone yet, still trying to convince myself going water cooled isn't a good idea. None the less I'll be using modern suspension and wheels etc. a member on here (kanerdog) came for a nose and has already managed to make me spend more money I bought the bike this week from a very nice chap of eBay, to be honest it's in much better nick than I thought it would be, almost feel bad about pulling it apart..... in between screwing some shelves to a wall for the mrs I've managed make a start on pulling it apart and weighing up what's gonna see the angle grinder..... in the post is a 999 swingarm and some 999 wheels, originally I did wanna use spoked wheels, but given the weight/ potential calliper clearance issues I'll go with these watch this space chaps
here is a nice set of wheels...probobaly more than you paid for the bike AWESOME Ducati Akront 40 spoke wheel set bevel wheels sport classic 900SS 750SS | eBay
Frame likely, quite fancy a aluminium tank and seat though prolly with lots of trips back and forth to a local machinist and a massive headache.
Without getting ahead of myself, I'm looking at fuel tanks, any recommendations chaps? currently these are strong contenders.... Bit of show and tell, bagged a pair of wheels and carrier etc, need repainting will do that on the final assembly.... next is to show off what can only be discribed as my a* carpentry skills untill the 999 swinger is on so I can get a actual real paddock stand in use I'm a bit stuck, so I had to break out the handsaw.... now awaiting a swingarm from across the pond so I can get cracking
What the actual fcuk!! I hope you remember what happened to the last wooden bike stand you made.......
I know Benway, I sold it for a offer I simply couldn't refuse.... Paid the deposit on my house don't you know if I stick these puppy's on eBay I reckon that d16 could be in reach
Ok so from across the pond a very second hand swingarm etc came. i knew this wasn't a simple bolt on affair, infact I think I've hit a big problem, I've sat next to the thing for a while and still remain skullfcuked. I/we have sussed out what to machine and make to gain correct wheel alignment, but I've just noticed the chain is gonna be a shit to fit. In a nutshell I need the sprocket to come away from the casings by about 25mm. a picture tells 1000 words and all that...... I intended to machine the casing off from where the vernier is set at to fit the swingarm as you can see from that point I'll have roughly 25mm to the center of the front sprocket.... them my swingarm, I'm a good 25mm to fat to the chain center.... To be honest I kinda wanted to stay air cooled as I think the engine will suit the look of the bike, but without throwing money at the problem I'm thinking a 749 engine could be a viable option. Only way out I think is a longer shaft to push out the sprocket more so. Any ideas gents?
personally i would steel a bit from everything, instead of trying to take it in one place, bit of here and a bit off there, you can also make up a offset sprocket fine adjustment....dont give up.
Yeah I kinda had I cracked, needed to machine a few items, it's just the front sprocket is wwaaayyyyy to far set into the engine. I didnt think with a floating sprocket offsetting it was a option?
offset sprocket wont work with the std output shaft, the ducati sprockets float a little. if you add offset, the sprocket will bind and wear the mating surfaces, and potentially throw the chain.
Not wanting to muddy the water but if you do machine a bit off will the front and rear wheels still be in alignment?
