97' 600ss Clutch Case Removal Guide

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Cornish Duke, Feb 8, 2014.

  1. My Haynes manual has gone Awol .... again.

I'm wanting to remove the clutch casing to re-spray rather than mask. I'm having trouble finding any diagrams/vids to guide me through the process.

    Anyone any links etc??

    :upyeah:

  2. Haven't a clue really because I haven't done one yet, but this is where I would start:

    1) Drain the oil
    2) Bleed the slave as dry as poss (blow it out from the top of the hose)
    3) Remove the hose
    4) Undo the bolts (make a diagram of their sizes and positions)
    5) Put a pillow on the floor
    6) Give the cover a clump with a rubber mallet but not too hard otherwise the pushrod etc could get damaged
    7) Alternatively leave 2 & 3 and try squeezing the clutch lever a few times
    8) Collect all the broken pieces
    9) Phone Craig at MotoRapido
    10) Break the bike
    11) Put an ad in Parts for Sale in Classifieds
    12) Put another ad in Wanted Classifieds 'Wanted: Yet another 600SS'

Tape the b*gger up and spray it in-situ.........all that work for the sake of some good tape and a sharp blade (which you run through the tape on the join to keep it straight and then peel off what you don't want masked).......Nobody would know from 2'-0"

  7. AL: I love point no 5, "put a pillow on the floor". Is that to snooze on when you have got bored?

  8. You know very well it is to stop the case from falling on the floor or scattered tools and damaging it......

  9. Or, lean the bike over to the left, a clip on on the wall works, with a bungee on the front brake lever, so you don't need to drain the oil. Loosen all the bolts a few mm then gently pull the clutch lever to break the seal. Remove the clutch hose, then the rest of the bolts, and the cover. Easy as that. You can mark where the bolts go, but they should all protrude a similar amount when you refit them. There's no gasket, so give both cases a good degrease and use threebond. All you then need to do is re-bleed the clutch, maki g sure not to get fluid on your nicely painted case!
