Panigale for racing superstocks

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Etherion, Feb 18, 2014.

  1. hi all, I'm just looking at exploring a few options right now and have just started the planning process.

Obviously for superstock class racing, the weapon of choice is the zx10r which I'm aware of.

In the even that I went down the ducati route - what would be my choice - The 1199base or 1199s? I didn't list the R as thats the most expensive model and unless its the only reliable one - then I would happily go with a cheaper version.

Obviously i've heard of a few superstock blowing their motors and for a privateer, thats pretty much going to kill my season so wondering whether that is still the case?

Additionally, how hard is it to strip off the abs and adjustable ohlins?

On another note, the plan to move to superstock 1000 is for next year with the bike being ready for this year end season testing so looking to buy now and build it up as the season goes. With the ducati cycle - do you think there would be an updated panigale october/november time as was the case with the 05 999 and 1198 from 1098 where it may be better if i waited for the new model?

    Many Thanks

  2. I'm no racing expert but surely even with the 1199s you would want it re-sprung and valved for your weight for racing, which surely means you would be better off buying a Base 1199 and putting an Ohlins cartridge kit in the front (if you can?) and upgrading the rear? Then the only difference is the wheels, but I assume you would need more than one set anyway.

maybe someone like Kope would be a great person to ask as he has so extensively modified a 1199? I'm a big fan of Ducati but if you want success on a limited budget you are definitely much better off with a ZX10.

  3. Yes, i'll be looking at having the suspension done.

On a base model - i would need a new rear shock and cartridge kit which would set me back a goo 2500gbp. However, on my 1098r with ohlins, I've been able to have it stripped and rebuilt to the same spec as off the shelf ohlins for around 500gbp. ie rear is now identical to the ttx mark 2 and the front is the same as a 25mm cartridge kit.

I'm just wondering whether that route is possible for the pani because they have the electronic suspension. IF its not, and i would need to get a cartridge kit and rear shock anyway, then it makes sense to go base model.

But then again, heard the pani like to eat conrods... so woondering whether that's changed a bit or still the case?

I know that the zx10r is the weapon of choice. With a slip on can, its around 190rwbhp but its not like riding a ducati:)

  4. I was told yesterday off Maxton you need a kit as the S model which I have has some sort of device at the top for electronically changing the settings , I would buy the base model ,, I wish I had ,im looking at either bitubo, about 2k Maxton 2k or you've got k-tech 2.5k I really fancy going the bitubo way ,,just doing some home work on it at the moment, as for engine probs ,the blade does gearboxes in ,the zx10 does motors in, the bmw does boxes in ,there all much a much , they will all fk up eventually,

  5. So i would need a cartridge kit? Or just the manual adjuster top part? I'll try finding out from a few peeps.

Heard about the blade and bmw doing boxes. I thought the zx10r does boxes too. At the end of the day, still cheaper than a ducati though.

Have you considered Mupo? I can seriously recommend them. I'm not fast enough to tell difference between them and ktech or ohlins but find them perfect. The person who fits them runs a superstock team at national and doing very well!! If you want, i can give you his details and you can have a chat with him although we're off to spain testing tomorrow. I know a few peeps who had Bitubo and now moved away from them though...

I get a lot of headshakes every time i mention going a ducati route:) The reality is i'm not there in terms of pace to win anything, so might aswell ride somethign i enjoy. If i was able to win - unfortunately, i would have a zx10r already.

  6. Call Wilf at motorapido. If he doesn't know, no one will. And who knows he may have kit laying around

  7. yeh eterion I was told full cartridge kit, I spoke to motorapido yesterday bradders gave some advice but very expensive for a basic set up and spring change, and I mean expensive

  8. They can give advice on likely costs I'd imagine and whats needed as a minimum.

  9. Why not use the 1098R I bet its still very competative

  10. Yes, infact i prefer the 1098r to the 1199. However, I would mind very much if i binned my 1098r and not so a 1199. Don't get me wrong, the 1199 is a ducati and very nice but just doesn't and hasn't got me very excited. But more excited than a zx10r if that makes sense.

  11. Managed to speak to a suspension place and they said it would cost in the region of 1000gbp all in. Job would include to revalve the rear shock to proper ohlins, and a superbike piston kit for the front to bring it to the same 25mm cartridge kit, springs and most importantly manual adjuster caps for both forks and rear shock.

Is this similar to what you were quoted?

  12. Seems a decent cost if it has the kit fitted.

  13. who was that with etherion that sounds cheap

  14. DMC ran/run a super stock 1199, they run the R pistons and remapped to run another 500rpm from memory, plus they have the alloy frame sides from an R which mount the swingarm which is adjustable and I think K-Tech internals

  15. How much would the r pistons cost? That would probably make more sense to go for a r model in the first place which would then be about 2x the price of a zx10r which would be harder to justify...to the missus that is.

Btw, Jimmy43, can't pm you the place. your inbox is full.

  16. Hey Li cant help with answers but good luck if you get this up and running!
