Would run with a faulty pickup sensor/wiring/connector for that coil & injector? Has the bike get wet recently, rain/washing etc?
That is what I meant, wrong terminology on my part. Shame you don't live closer 'cos you could have tried mine.
Hi guys, I had this on my 998S, new Ducati ECU was £1200 so Dave Wood Racing installed a Nemsis for £600, set it up on his rolling road and it is so much stronger in the mid-range and off corners it's great. Almost happy my ecu failed in the first place. I hope you get it sorted without too much expense but sounds like you're in for an ecu ;o(((
Firstly thanks to all for the advice, and generous offers of help and here’s an update in case its of interest. The original ‘faulty’ ECU marked as follows; IAW 59M.A2 IAW 59M.A2/HW010/0115/099 12v=051 02 0H5Y1PK2C And Ducati over labelled 020D1027 998RSADUCATI015SA Was replaced with a second hand ECU off a 999 (same engine) marked as follows; IAW 59M.A2 IAW 59M.A2/HW010/00115/099 12v=078 02 0H5Y33J3C And Ducati over labelled S21DD029 999DUCATI Also marked; 61600.630.00 996r DUCATI 007 The result? I had a no cylinder 998r as it would not now start at all. I refitted the faulty original and she is back to one cylinder again. I fired her up and she ran reasonably happily on one and appeared to attempt to run on two for a split second. I can feel a spark in the front HT lead when running but cannot get a spark when I earth the plug outside the cylinder. I suspect the replacement ECU was faulty and am getting ready to fit a third ECU marked as follows and off a 999s; IAW 59M.A8 IAW 59M.A8/HW010/s21-D027 12v=107.03 3DHID+H4D And Ducati over labelled 0130DQ04 999SDUCATI020 Also marked 61601.047.00 999 DUCATI016 Any more thoughts would be welcome, particularly nif you can translate any of the above code. I’m assuming that the base ECU is an IAW59M with varying maps flashed on it and identified by the varying codes? I’ll keep you posted. BTW I went backmover the various connector including the crank position sensor and they also seem ok.
As per previous posts in this thread, what the label says and what the software is on the ECU can sometimes be two completely different things. I doubt the "new" replacement 59M.A8 will work as it's a different hardware revision to the original 59M.A2 (HW010). The reason they fail is that the coil driver inside the ECU blows, so the coil never gets the signal to fire, hence no spark. You may have been unlucky and bought another duff ECU off ebay - it does happen!
Thanks guys, apologies I omitted the /HW010 reference from my last post (now corrected) so can I presume that the ECU is of a similar generation? Do I still have an immobiliser problem? I seem to recall a thread which described a method of bypassing the immobiliser by shorting out certain pins on the ECU......or am I dreaming?
If you can get your ECU's to me I will clone the 998 to the 999 and disable the immo. All you have to pick up is the postage. PM me if interested. The Christmas post may delay things though.
You seem to be concentrating on the spark side of things and the ECU. I have read through the posts. You have said that you think it sprks when the plug is in the head and also that the plug seems dry. You don't mention whether you have tried swapping the injectors over to see if that swaps the problem
Higgy,Great minds! As Chrisw will confirm, Ive just taken the injectors out and they are currently being cleaned and tested. Its such a fiddly job to take them out I didnt swap them but took them to be worked on straight away. Anyone know the operating pressure for the injectors?
The pressure is on the fuel pressure regulator, but all Ducati standard systems are 3 Bar pressure. Some of the high-flow are 4 Bar and there are adjustable (Ducati Corse) regulators too.
Antoye, Thanks for that. The injectors have been checked at 2 bar and are delivering identical amounts of fuel though the pattern is different. They are going to be tested at 3-3.5 bar tomorrow then they'll be cleaned and I'll refit them. Doesnt sound like the problem is obviously EFI related though so I reckon I'll be taking ChrisW up on his offer to clone an ECU for me. I really miss carbs and points.....life was so much simpler then.
Get Chris to clone your ECU as it's a really easy check to do - simply swap it out - and it will tell you straight away if the ECU is a problem. Within 5 minutes you'll know one way or the other!
I had the injectors tested and cleaned and the outcome was as follows; Before cleaning both were delivering identical amounts of fuel but there was a marked difference in spray pattern After cleaning there was no significant change. Tests were carried out at pressures of 3 to 3.5 bar. While it is odd that there is a variation in spray pattern between two apparently identical injectors it doesnt appear that my problem lies with the injectors so back to the ECU which Chrisw has kindly offered to clone for me, Ill be sending the ECUs to him after Christmas and Ill report on the outcome later. Happy Christmas to everyone.
Are you running Ducatidiag? If you are then you can dump the map out of your 998 ECU and email it to me. I can then flash it to one of my spare 59M ECU's (disable immo) and ship to you. This will save time. If no Ducatidiag access then I will need your 998 ECU as I do not have access to the exact map in your ECU.
Hi Chris, I realize this post is over a year old but was wondering if you still offer the reflash service. I have had a problem with my 1998 916 as above ie only running on one cylinder. After borrowing a mates (also 916) ecu as a test the bike ran fine. Having returned said ecu, I'm back to a single cylinder. I am looking to get a reflash as a hopefull repair. I would of course be willing to pay this service if you think that would cure the problem.
