Hello chaps, I brought myself a little 916 last year as I've always wanted one since they came out, after a bit of looking around I found this one, it had a full history and the money was right and it just needed a 'bit of a clean'. So this winter I decided to give it's bit of a clean and was hoping to then stick it in my living room (much to the horror and disgust from my mates). But as ever a bit of a clean goes deeper and deeper. So I'm looking to re-touch up everything to bring it back up to showroom standard, so the bike currently looks like this... It has now had a bit of a steam clean and the silver paint work has decided to leave the engine, so it looks like I'm gonna have to strip the engine and get it painted properly, can anyone recommend anyone who can do a good heat resistant paint job to original spec or better.? I've also found I have the dreaded ali fork leg corrosion... But fork legs from Cali aren't that bad a price and look like new. This will be my on going rebuild, thanks for looking... Dave.
hi mate, I am part way through doing a 748 (mine not original) its posted on here so check it out if interested! Its a lot of work but really rewarding and I wish you all the best! still the coolest bike ever and worth keeping them up to scatch
If you are taking the engine out you might want to look at the rear engine mounting bolt as that often causes the most problems when rebuilding a bike. A few people have posted on here recently about the problems they have had. It's worth starting to soak it now in penetrating oil ready for when you do want to have a go at it.
Thanks for the advice guys Gulp, I hope that doesn't happen. But your build looks really sweet, I hope mine is as good.
