hi,got a 1995 600ss which has had a 900ss carb engine fitted, possibly 900 frame,as such it has single front disc which i want to change to twin front disc ,which other models forks will fit , the bike could possibly have a 900 frame,do all the ss (600,750,900)models up to 1998 use same frame ,any advice appreciated, thanks steve
ANY twin disc SS or monster forks will fit OR 851/888 SS IE WILL FIT IF YOU USE THE YOKES see Imolas posts regards Steve B
Doesnt your 600 fork have the caliper mounts on both legs? ie dont ducati just fit a cover to the unused brake caliper mounts and wheels disk bolt holes on the 600? if so it should just be a case of mounting up a "new" disk , brake caliper (and asociated master cylinder brake lines). PS that would still leave you with unadustable forks (if they are 600ss originals) . Depending on how many parts you want to replace and keep a matched front /rear wheel style , then obviously forks from a carb 900ss will fit , forks from the later ssie bikes will also fit but will need the matching front wheel (and rear if you want them to look the same) and calipers (65mm spacing up from 40mm used on carb ss /888, and early 916. I also think most monster forks (early varierties !) will fit but length may need tobe checked (heard they were shorter) and ST forks also (but in this case longer) . Ps most (all?) duc forks after 98 switched to the 25mm front axle , though there were some using it before then (ST? and 916) ... Forks from a 92 on 851/888 also fit ... and the other gotcha is the SS/888 range changed the front axle to 20mm from 17mm around 1994 but there maybe some parts bin specials (from ducati) with early wheels/forks in later bikes.
Rgerading the axle, watch out for the wheel year of manufacture and the speedo drive....there are two types for the carb SS (at least two). Standard forks for the 750SS and 900SS should fit without any problem.....There seems to be three types. Marzocchi non-adjustables; Showa fully adjustables (I have both) and Showa partly-adjustable. AL.
hi,thanks for your replys ,will double check fork leg but sure there was no facility for another caliper, thanks stevo
Stevo, ANY fork with a 50mm top and a 54mm bottom yoke diameter will fit.....any ST2/ST4, 900SS, 900SSie, 800SSie, 1000DS, or pretty much any Monster fork too...huge choice out there...
If it is any help I have just looked at a 1997 Ducati brochure and the 600SS clearly doesn't have provision for a right side brake caliper. I think Nog is right about all the forks he mentions above --- I haven't ever bothered to measure them, but you will have to watch out for the caliper mounting lug bolts hole centres becasue there are variations......I'm sure Nog will correct me if I'm wrong  So probably your cheapest way out is find a pair of Marzocchis like the ones in the ad below and one caliper etc etc. And these are on ebay.....DUCATI MONSTER 600SS 750SS 900SS BRAKES PAIR OF FRONT FORKS LEGS STANCHIONS | eBay If the seals on the Marzocchis have failed, they are the easiest to replace, but check the stanchion chrome for pitting etc. AL
Its true that there are two types of caliper mounts, the one you have, which has 40mm bolt spacings and the newer one which has 65mm bolt spacings...but both types will fit all the discs bar those of the 749 onwards as they have the same offset ( 10mm) unless you use wheels from an R variant, which has discs with a 15mm offset. However, I have to disagree with Al....get the later Showa forks rather than the horrible Marzocchis....
Different axle(25mm)/wheel/speedo drive on fuel injected bikes c1998 on. The forks link above on ebay are non adjustable by looks of it. Cheapest option is a pair of 900SS legs from a late carb bike. 96ish imho.
I have a pair of SSie showa forks with 65mm caliper spacing for sale.. i bought them off Keith (900 Streetfighter) They are no use to me on the 851 i now own so up for sale.. They are in VGC with no pitting or leaks. Nog you are spot on about marzocrappi forks.. Best place for them is the scrap bin! Just to add.. I had 750ssie showa forks on my 600ss dd race bike with twin 65mm calipers fitted with Nog's PF pads and wilber springs and it stopped and handled very nicely
Nah...cheapest option is a pair of Marzocchis like those in the ad link I posted (because not many people want them).......best option at the cheaper end of the range would be fully adjustable Showas from the earlier Ess-esses, but the later cheaper Showas weren't fully adjustable if I recall correctly.....even though they do have the bottom bosses for the adjusters. AL.
Al, the later showas are much better than the early showas,, you will find the late marzocchis (65mm) spacing are poor quality non adjustable.
You are talking about carb model Showas aren't you? Because if so, I disagree with you.....I have early fully adjustables which were compared with a pair of the late Showas (partly adjustable)....the fully adjustables are much better, especially when a specialist has been through them. And the late Marzocchis are no worse, no better than the early Marzocchis.....which is a pity, because Marzocchi used to be bl**dy good in the 80s. AL
I have all adjusters on both SSie and ST4 showas.. same as older SS showa forks. But one his hidden like on the 916 showa forks!
