899 v 1199r

  1. Personally, i'd go for the 899. There is always the 'want' for the bigger bike when one pulls up next to you - but where does it stop? If you had the 1199, you'd feel the same if a 1199R pulled up next to you, and again the same if you had the R and the Superleggereeerrggrreeaaa pulled up.

  2. Plus, there is scope to make the 899 really tasty and unique IF it's your thing, the 1199s has much of it done already. It do about 40 trackdays for the cost difference

  6. Watched the Barrons review, I thought (could be wrong) that the power output was the same in sport and race? Just the T/C settings and throttle response were different?

    apart from that it was a brilliant review, much more enjoyable and honest than magazine reviews!

  7. Me too, although I don't think he says it's producing more power in race mode, I think it's just referring to the immediacy of throttle response, or feeling of power because of it.
     
  8. I couldnt begin to compare the 1199r with an 899. They are in no way similar except for looks.

    Id have an "r" if I had the dosh but really, it'd be wasted unless I had a suspension guy with me at trackdays.

    The like of the 899 you can rail it all day and get away with it to a degree.

    Each to their own i suppose.

  10. Hi Dave, thanks :)

    Sport mode may have the same power (im not sure tbh) but its the time it takes to get it down that made it feel a little sluggish. You notice this particularly when going up through the gears, each time the new gear is engaged, there is a delay in the power being applied. Whereas race its much more instantaneous and gives a feeling if 'more' power as its delivered faster.
    Really, I would have preferred 'sport' to be the current 'race' and then a 'slick' mode or something which turns everything off - or indeed perhaps as "custom" mode. Seeing as a lot of the settings are changeable, it would be nice to have a saved custom mode, AND the default modes available rather than messing with the default. But hey ho, its not a major issue.
     
  11. And just to add, in a strange way, i liked this because because of the lower power... I know - odd.

    I've had a few very fast litre bikes now and i've slowly been losing the love of riding on the roads. I would come back from a ride frustrated that the conditions weren't perfect, the traffic was too heavy and most of all, the worry that you'd get bollocked for doing something stupid. I wanted to use the potential of the litre bikes and there is just NO POSSIBLE way you can do so without seriously endangering yourself/others or doing 'prison' speeds. Dont care what you say, its not possible.

    This bike made me love road riding again, flat chat everywhere, feeling of total control and enjoyment of just being out on the bike. Dont get me wrong, you can still get in trouble on this bike, but it will be less trouble, as its less important to 'go nuts'. Besides, I've still got my blade for track to really find the limits and enjoy litre power where it matters.

    The big balls can fly past me all day long down the duel carriageway, I dont give a shit - i'm happier on the little 899...

    .......thats why i bought one ;)
     

  12. I think the buying public agree Mr E hence why the 899 is selling so well. It has more than enough power to have fun but a price tag more realistic to the majority of the buying public. It was the same idea that made me buy an 848 and they carried it over with great success.

    I suspect it's sales figures have probably raised some eyebrows in the industry and proves that you don't need to assault the rider with monster power to make the bike attractive to buy.

    I agree totally, when I ordered mine I had the usual "why did you not order the bigger one" but I already have a HP4 Carbon, Gixxer 1000 and a busa and I wanted the feeling back you get when riding a 600, but with a bit less peakyness (if that could ever make sense lol !!)

    I have just come back from doing 3 days on the Valencia GP circuit (on the GIXXER) and it's almost painful riding on the roads now, the surface of today's roads is shocking now :(

    Oh get your rear shock sorted by MCT as there terrible as standard, you will defo notice the difference!

I agree also, was accelerating on my 848 Evo yesterday and seriously wondering what I would get out of having more power, it felt (to me) like it was going to dig itself a hole in the tarmac the way it was pulling, and it's already fast enough that when you are on a spirited ride you have to think about speed a bit, which I didn't so much on my Daytona.

    Hopefully it will spur Aprilia on to pull there fingers out there arse and make a 750/800cc version of the RSV4, hacked off with them dithering about in Noale throwing more and more 'Factory R ARPC Special Works Super RSVP' Models at us....
     
  15. Problem is with a Rsv4 Phil is would it be an out and out rev monster in a 750 package ?
    At 1000cc it makes a decent amount of torque to not make riding in general a pain but some 750's are hard work for anything but a spirited blast.

    I came from a Gsxr 750 and while it was fun it could become a chore stirring up the motor all the time when on occasion you just want to make progress without all the fuss especially if you tour etc.
     
  16. To me the simple answer is, buy the 1199 if you have the budget if not the 899, both superb bikes.
    I am fortunate to have the 1199s I would have bought the R if I had the budget at the time, will do next time thou.
     
  17. Opinions and Opinions, it's all very subjective. What's good for one is not good for the other, one mans meat is another mans poison and all that.
    Ride both and make up your mind.
    I ride mostly on track, have an 1199R and S1K and after 4 days on track it feels like there is a bike problem, not enough power (not that i'm a god or anything it's just you get used to it). So in my opinion depends on what YOU do.

    Both are great bikes (899/1199+S1K to add a 3rd) but it's what's right for you that matters, not what everyone else thinks.

  20. after reading this thread i've logged on to youtube and watched mentioned review (+ the 1199 one) . am i the only one who didn't like it?
