My starter motor decieded to stop working today. Had to bump start her a couple of times in wales . Checked the relay and definitely getting good power to the starter. The bike laboured starting this morning but I assumed this was just lack of use over winter. Stopped for petrol in wales and it struggled to turn the engine a couple of times before giving up completely. I'm guessing I need either a new starter or to replace the brushes. The bike has done 56,000 miles the last 7k on 944 high compression pistons. Anyone any good advice? Cheers Brian
Howdo Brian. What voltage have you got on the battery? Is the relay clicking? All leads n terminal connections clean? Plugs good? If it doesn't start straight away try putting in gear rocking forward n backwards and retry starting. Cheers Pablo
the battery (pc680) shows 12.6 volts, this value prety much stays the same when I press the starter. Relay clicks as expected. If I short between the feed to the starter motor and the exhaust I get a good spark on pressing the starter. No signs of life from the starter motor. At least it bump starts easy enough so I had a good run in Wales and got home
Electrex do a brush kit for £21 and a starter motor for £144. A bit short of cash at present so may order the brush kit and hope that cures it. Have the battery on carge just in case and will cosult the haynes later. Thanks
If you can get the old one apart without breaking anything, there is a good chance it will be the brushes..... ..and if you can't fnd the proper fitment, buy some that are larger, they are relatively easy enough to sand down to the correct size..... ...I have done several sets of brushes on various starter motors for bikes and cars (and other things like power tools etc). OK...point taken.....it was just a thought. Still, if you consider the time involved, maybe a good secondhand will do, but being secondhand, it could also be duff. Perhaps the best way to go is get it reconditioned by specialists. AL.
I'll probably give the brushes a go. After the issues getting the barrel off I have a range of hammers, a three foot crowbar and a good hacksaw. I'll manage somehow, hopefully without needing a replacement. Ta
If you want to make sure it's the starter motor, run a jump lead from the poss on your battery to the terminal on the starter motor. This by-passes all other electrical possibilities. If it doesn't turn, you've confirmed it's the starter motor.
As above. Also, have you got some decent battery leads on it? You can buy sets online, or as I did, take all the battery and starter leads off and match them up woth 10mm stuff at Halfords.
Definitely getting good power to the starter. Just put a brush kit into a spare starter. Off to the garage.
Hope that works! ** Tip the bike over the other way to the sidestand, i.e. lean it over on a jack on the clutch side & you shouldnt need to drain your oil to take the flywheel cover off?
Fixed, fitted a 600 flywheel while I had it apart. Need some good weather for a test run but starts well.
You must be joking, have you seen his tool box, assorted hammers, 3ft crow bar and a hacksaw. The man's a genius. Steve
3 casing bolts and the front bolt of the starter motor. Heads where very soft. 14 years and never off. Two drilled and removed with an easy out, two I had to drill the heads off and then use pliers.
