i was recently hankeirng for an 899....but still unsure what to do. I have an option to sell the 848 and buy a 1098s. Now having recently been in Cartagena for 3 days of track time, i can stay the 848 is prob the best road bike ive owned yet. Its handles stupidly well and plenty of welly. There is a 1098s thats came up...so i have the option to upgrade. Anyone taken this pepsi challenge, how did you get on from the 848 to 1098 ? I know the bigger capacity has a little more powe,r but is it worth the leap up as such? tks in advance as usual !
I went from a 916 to an 1198. The extra power is awesome. But my 916 is much easier to turn and provides ample grunt for me. The 1198 is insanely quick and feels more refined. But I prefer the 916's looks, and it flatters my riding skills. I suspect the 848 would be similar. I cant comment on the 899 as its a different beast entirely. I like to tour on the 1198 but for a track the 916 is better. Or 916 in corners, 1198 on straight and braking.
I went from a 748 to a 1098S. At the time I wanted an 848 but the dealer had sold it whilst I was on route but the 1098 had come in. I thought the 1098 was a great bike - did Silverstone track day on it shortly after but it always felt too much and too easy to go way fast. Also I prefer a bike where you have to change gear to get it really moving. The 1098 you could just turn the throttle and hit warp speed. Anyway after a dabble with an RSV and then a 749S I am now on the 848 Evo Corse which personally I much prefer to the 1098 although sometimes it would be nice to just turn the throttle!
Sounds as if a combination of a 916 chassis with a 1098 motor may yield a pretty good bike...Hmmmmm...
My 848evo is perfect for the track and the right kind of power on the road, anymore and I'd be going even faster than I already do and be getting into trouble. Not sure which 848 you have but I reckon the 848 evo corse or the 899 is the bike to have over a 1098 etc. if you fancy a change.
I had a blast on my friends 1098 & I dont know.. Maybe it was the tyres?.. Me not used to the extra weight?... Or the suspension being setup different to my 848 but it felt like on the bends it was either upright or about to fall over... I didnt have that same confidence feel with the 848.. Another thing, the extra grunt wasnt really noticable.. The only improvement I felt were the brakes.. MUCH better.. oh & the noise from his pipercross filter but thats not really relevant haha...
Javing raced around country roads with similar riders on 1098 and 1198s, my 848 really didnt lose much even on fast straight roads, few bike lengths maybe..
Agreed, my mate on his 1098 would get a bit on the straights but I'd get him on the bends... He's a better rider than me too & back in the day with me on my R6 & him on his GSXR he'd be way better in all situations....
I went from 1098S to 848 evo 848 can be thrashed more often and im pretty sure i lap cadwell the same or quicker on the 848, starts easier and has a nicer clutch, easier on rubber and insurance. I had a GSXR1000 for 10 months in between. Too much. Youve got to be pretty handy to honestly get the big bikes flat out. Ive never looked back from the 848. I love it.
Its all about what you really want. If you really want an 899 and can afford one then thats what you must do. If you don't, you will always wish you had. Thats as simple as it gets in the motorcycle ownership world.
The only reason I prefer the 1198 is the lazy power and torque. All other things being equal the 848 is a fantastic bike. I'd love an 848EVO in that silver paint scheme.
Got a 848 next to my 1098s in the garage. Simple way I see it..... 848= a cracking useable bike 1098s= maybe to much for road use, but it packs all the nice bits, the thing that does it for me it pretty much scares me just looking at it.... I Don't get that with many bikes Side by side the 1098 will pull away no doubt, maybe not by miles, but when your on it it feels waaaayyyyy quicker
You want the best of both really, an 848 s ! I wish they had made that bike, full ohlins, dqs, traction control. Though I suppose the corse is closest. That's the other option keep the 848 and make it better with some choice mods. Though you won't get the grunt of course.
I agree. I assume they don't make a fully tricked smaller bike (848, 899) as they want us to be tempted to spend more on the bigger bike, but I have to believe they could get the same profit from an 899S with all the trick bits that is more usable on the road, and they would sell like hot cakes. I'd buy one this afternoon for, say, 15K, but I don't want to spend 12.5K+ on a compromised 899.
Compromised might be a bit harsh ! but I get your point. If there was an 899 s for sale I'd order it today and then tell my wife the day after or maybe a bit longer than that............
