New to riding and want to get into track riding.

  1. Hi,

I thought this was the most relevant section which would hopefully get the most advice.

Basically, I am fairly new to the motorcycling world and currently use my hypermotard 796 for my commute and the odd weekend ride which is perfect. But, I would love to get into track riding, I have never done it before and not to sure where to start and I would love a bit of advice on what I need etc.

I am located in Guildford, Surrey if there are any fairly local tracks or anyone around this area going for a track day/ ride.

    Thanks in advance

    Liam

  3. Brands Hatch as Jerry shows is closest

Re advice, theres plenty put there some good some not.

  4. Hi there i also am thinking of doing a track day on my Hyper later on this year. Never done one on a bike before and thinking of Brands Hatch.

  5. Its an easy circuit to learn, decent grip, fast and slow corners both left and right so really nice mix.

  6. At this stage don't take any advice as non of it will make sense tbh

Just get on your hyper and pop along to a track day, listen to the briefing, take it in, and go enjoy yourself. It'll be your very first Trackday do relax and don't worry, everybody has their first bud, you won't be the only one or the last.

After that you'll either love it or hate it, then you'll have some questions :)

  7. There is some advice to take now. Tape up your mirrors, your lights, and your speedo

  8. ah ok, Brands Hatch doesn't look far at all. And I see its around the £95 mark for a day.
I assume you don't get tuition or anything you just get set run times to go around the track? Are you separated into groups on ability?

Hugh, thanks for letting me know, I will be interested in joining you if you have a space free or need to go with anyone.

Does anyone ride to these events or do you put the bikes on a trailer in case of crashes etc?

  9. Good luck with getting it under £140! Just ride, be fine

  10. Also, i see all your bikes have crash bungs on, I assume this is an intelligent essential?

  11. Nope. Whats essential is you ride within your limits and enjoy going in one direction along with everyone else :)

  12. If this is your first Trackday you really just don't need to worry too much.

Yes fit some crash bungs if you want, It won't hurt.

You'll find a wide variety of skill level there and you'll be in the novice group and should be wearing a supplied high viz vest to indicate its your first time, this is for your saftey and others as your braking, lines and general track awareness won't be as sharp as some.

But again, don't worry about it, everybody starts somewhere.

To be honest your riding a 796 Hypermotard, it's not particularly track orientated so just get a good flow on and enjoy the ride.

Book with Focused events and you can get some tuition free from following an instructor for a lap or two but can get full sessions for about £30 with people such as Neil Hodgson

Ride there on normal tyres pressures but before heading on to the track visit the tyre guy and ask him what pressures he'd suggest for your make of tyres (probably drop to early 30's/late 20's depending what you run)

Other than that as Bradders says, take off your license plate, tape up your speedo so you can't see it, tape up your mirrors or fold them in so you can't use them, ride your own line and DONT stick it down the inside of people heading in to a corner, they'll hate you :)

  13. Crashbungs can hurt. They can break engine mounts and destroy swingarms. They can turn a slide into a grip and flip. In my experience and others. For every two that likes them theres probably one that doesn't, althou front wheels sliders I reckon work :)

  14. Thanks chaps, this is really handy to know. I will hopefully sort something soon.

  15. MSV do novice track days which if you are concerned would be a fairly safe way to go.

  16. There are some evening taster events you could go on and it wont cost you a packet to find out you either love it or hate it.

There are of course the novice friendly Ducati trackdays this year coming up but you`ll have to wait until May for the first one.
As has been said LISTEN TO THE BREIFINGS, NOVICE GROUP RIDERS USUALLY HAVE A DEDICATED BREIFING AFTER THE MAIN ONE AIMED AT THE TOTAL NOVICE AND ASK INSTRUCTORS FOR HELP.

WHEN DID THE CAPS LOCK turn itself on!!!!

  17. Yep, had some put the energy into a frame and totally bent/fooked it

  18. Focused events are fine, I did roughly 8 or 9 track days with them last year and all were ran well with a big focus on safety

The only reason most moan about focused is because they're trying to weed out the club racers from using them as practice , I'd say for a beginner they're a far better choice than no limits
