I had a good session on my bike this morning drained all the fuel and cleaned things and lubricated all pieces that needed doing so. I went to start it for the first time in a while and the start button worked, I tried turning her over then stopped, and then pressed the button again and nothing.... not a bean. The button seems to of just stopped working. what could it be?
Have you checked the plug in the starter relay, it sounds like it might have fallen out. If not fuse might be worth checking oh I i don't think your stupid!!!
I checked the plug and followed it as far as I could see. Also checked the fuses on the dash. Are they the only ones? Thanks
Try slackening the two bolts that clamp the twist grip. Turn it a few degrees back and forth then tighten it up again and try the starter button. Sounds odd but it worked for me.
I will definitely try that because I did have the throttle unit off yesterday. I'll let you know how it works out for me.
Clean connections of earth leads to engine and frame, plus main leads to starter solenoid and starter. Also check that the big 30amp fuse next to the battery hasn't blown, although this should only protect the reg/rec. AL
I think I have a dodgy starter solenoid, but got it working, just now it won't fire. Got dark before I could carry on looking. Any suggestions? Had water in my fuel before this situation so had totally drained the tank and starting over with fresh in.
A dodgy / failed solenoid won't stop the engine from firing...........all it will do is stop it turning over. The question is: Will the engine turn over if you by-pass the solenoid? Use a pair of jump leads......one from the battery to the starter terminal post and one from the battery to the engine / earth.....connect the starter one first........you might only have to touch the starter post if the earths are good.
Before i tried the jump leads technique i sprayed some carb cleaner in the carbs and put some water displacer in the fuel and she fired. But revved up really high without any throttle, next job... figure that out. Thank you Arquebus you always have very useful info.
Just kept doing it each time I started it. Then got scared it might blow or something and it was quite late so didn't want to pass the neighbours off so I stopped.
Carb cleaner won't clean the carbs very much by spraying it in the intakes..........in fact, if it manages to get elsewhere in the carbs it might dislodge some cr*p and give you more trouble by blocking smaller jets. But, it indicates (to me) that the fuel in the carbs probably isn't enough on it's own to run the engine and the cleaner is making up for the deficiency; so sorry to say it, but I think you need to make sure fuel is getting through to the carbs and that they aren't full of cr*p anyway. AL
The problem is all just water in the fuel still. Any tips on how to drain the whole thing, still always ends up with some in it. Drained the whole tank, used some wynns dry fuel, every time I drain the float bowls she runs beautifully, until more water then gets back in and she bogs out and dies.
So the next question is, why is the water getting into the fuel? does it happen each time you wash the bike? if so your filler drain is blocked or worse dislodged from the lug inside the tank. You shouldn't have to keep draining the tank or adding fuel additive. Drain the float bowls (small screw on the underside of each carb with a pipe attached) and then recharge by turning the engine over until it fires. Excessive water in the tank will eventually rust a hole in the bottom left of the tank, as i found mutch to my cost! . .
sorry the bit about you draining the float bowls didnt sink in. I think your problem is the drain hole or drain hole pipe. Ill see if i can get a photo for you.
Over all the heavy rain we had...I was away and my cover had blown off, and I don't think the fuel cap was clicked all the way down, hence water in the tank (my own stupid fault) I drained the tank once but with the shape of the tank I couldn't get every bit out, I used the pump to push the fuel out. In the left hand float bowl it seems to be about 40% water each time. Must be nearly all out by now... Surely.
ere you go. Drain hole top of picture. Drain pipe is just visible under the drain itself. This runs through the tank and attaches on another outlet at the bottom. My feeling is that either the hole is blocked or the pipe has become detached . If it is the latter however an amount of fuel may drain from the tank and out of the hose each time you fill the bike.
