750ss to 749?

  1. Hi, I'm looking at possibly changing bikes. The 750ss is my first proper bike, had it just close to a year but I would like something a bit more modern. Hopefully selling the SS to finance it, but was wondering how the 749 is in comparison? I don't want to sell the 749 but it feels very sluggish. Will be doing a bit of commuting (30 miles round trip daily) so would like to to know how it is in the real world!

  2. Nope? Boo

  3. They are not really made for commuting. Can coment on the 749 engine charictorists but I cant stand slow traffic on my 999. Something like a Hyper or air cooled Multi would be better.

  4. I was afraid somebody may say that :frown: It won't be used for commuting all the time, as I'm getting a second commuting bike/scooter and the 749 for occasional rides. Maybe it isn't that practical but was hoping for something that was addictive like the 750ss

  5. Change the gearing and its fine. I went 3 up on the back and 1 down on the front. It will hit the rev limiter in top but the speedo says 155, so its fast enough.

  6. Gone down 1 in the front and it's good on the streets. Was looking for more oomph from the engine mind, was considering a 748 but I like the stand out look of the 749.

  7. I commute on a 749 and it's fine, my only advice would be not to commute on it during the salty months

One of the best decisions I made was to buy a 749s, after riding a 750ss for a year or so. I absolutely love the 749s, especially after the suspension was set up by an acknowledged expert and the Michellin 2CT's are the perfect compliment to the set up.
I regret selling the SS though, like a lot of things you don't fully appreciate them until there gone!
Essential extras to have imo: Quick action throttle, Termis or similar, and bobbins for a proper paddock stand, the o.e.m paddock stand is a disaster waiting to happen!
I don't commute on mine, but have still racked up 19k miles in 3years, I love opening my garage door, and seeing it sitting there on the stand, and the prospect of a ride always makes me excited.

  9. buy a 900ss there are some excellent low mileage examples around for not a lot of £££

better mid range and bottom end than 749 and lower servicing costs

  10. Can't stand my 999 in traffic, gets hot very quick even in moving traffic. Right leg gets cooked in jeans, ok in leathers.

  11. Thanks guys. Decided that I'm going to get a 749 and keep the 750ss for wintery/wet commutes.

  12. That is a stunning bike Ghost. Unfortunately, I have no cash until next month at earliest when settlement comes in. My mate has thrown a spanner in the works and told me to get a 748!

  13. And if he said stick your hand in the fire would you?
