749 side stand & the amount of lean 749

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by DeanF, Mar 30, 2014.

  1. My 749s seems to lean over quite alot on the sidestand..... Now it does not seem bent or overly worn on the hinge .. So just wondering if this is normal for this model ?.. Im thinking of adding an aluminium pad to the base of the stand that is cut to size & held in place with sum countersunk allen screws...... Or is therer another alternative ?
    Cheers

  2. Sticking a bit on the end might smash your fairing in !

    I'm sure there's a thread about this somewhere. :)

  3. Check the two mounting bolts screwed into the engine case. They have a habit of coming loose

  4. Mounting bolts can cone lose easily, and it has been known for the metal bracket to shear in half! Luckily I was in garage at time this happened on my old 749 hybrid & was able to jump under bike to protect fairing. Ducati do not honour the bracket shearing as a fault.

  5. True....... Ill check the bolts tomorrow & see what i can do ... Cheers all

  6. I have the same problem with my 749. My hearts in my mouth when it's on it's side stand.
In the end i took an old rubber mallet ( originally used for knocking in tent pegs) and cut it up to match the shape of the foot and then superglued it on to the stand. I don't usually have much luck glueing stuff but so far it has held and leaving it parked is much less nerve racking now.:Nailbiting:

  7. Good idea that..... I must admit that i have never found superglue to be very super :D I find a good quality exterior No Nails Sticks like a Limpet on a Rock ....

  8. Use small plank of wood to change angle in garage and ice hockey puck when out and about:upyeah:

  9. I thought the same about mine when I first got her but after seeing other 749/999 they all seem to lean morn than I expected. My stand seems to move more forward than I think i necessary but It seems to do the job although I do climb of her slowly just in case.

  10. Over time the stand almost wears it's self away between the mounting point and the bit that it mounts to (best way I can describe it) through constant operation and this causes the bike to lean more. If you take a closer look when it's in the 'engaged position' you'll see where where the stand and mounting touch it will be worn flatter. Pro Twins re welded the original lump back on to my stand and it now sits more upright. The more the bike leans over the more stress it puts on the mounting palte bolts which do snap.

  11. I can't really understand why bikes sold in a RHD market have stands fitted on the left which means getting off into the traffic.
Also i'd have thought that the lengths of the sidestands should take into account on which side of the road they are used due to the camber. Obviously it's not a problem with Japanese bikes cos they ride on the correct (left) side of the road but do BMW have the same problem? I don't think so. I think that perhaps for Ducati stands are an afterthought.;)

  12. I`ve had a 15mm thick piece of aluminium welded on and shaped to match the sidestand base.

You can`t add much because of the fairing.

One of the bolts that hold the bracket was also loose and bent.
Don`t know if it`s standard practice but I`ve watched my MOT tester, with an assistant, lean my other bike on the side stand to raise the front then rear wheel to check for bearing play. Not so good with an aluminium stand.
I`m a lot more comfortable with the lean angle now, before it was just down right scary.

  13. I wouldn't let anyone use the 'Cheese' side-stand to do that with my bike!

Find a tester with the proper equipment to raise the front of the bike.

  14. Go to another MOT station, that's just lazy, mine puts the bike on an ABBA stand and does the job properly

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  15. If you have raised the ride height this will also make the bike lean over more on the side stand.

  16. My MOT tester is a very good friend and I like to give friends my custom if possible.
However, I have never been comfortable with him leaning my bike over on the side stand so I will mention to him that there are better ways, ABBA stand maybe. On the plus side, he does turn a blind eye to non standard pipes.

If your tester friend doesn't want to buy an abba stand, you might suggest to him that he lifts the front of the bike by putting a webbing strap ( the stuff like seat belts are made of) around the frame and lift it with an engine hoist/ block and tackle- hanging from the roof of the garage.

  18. Good advice I think - chaps that do mine just lift via the bars (tester on each side). I didn't know but these guys (Yamaha dealer not ducati) told me that they had heard on stands snapping / crank cases? cracking when testers lifted bike up onto side stand!

  19. My mot tester dosent lift nothing.

  20. Top job there, looks really neat & tidy.....
