After some good old forum and thread searching I found a very interesting link through to a German site which seems to have a very reasonable solution to the exhaust servo removal. Far cheaper than the plug in jobby (£80?) has anybody used this? I mean its German so very likely to just work but thought I'd ask. also not being mechanically minded can anybody tell what/how it does what it does? DUCATi 1098 848 1198 1098S BYPASS EXUP VALVE FOR SERVO MOTOR and OPEN EXHAUST | eBay is this the same at a lesser price?
So the standard servo "motor" rotates and pulls a cable attached to the exhaust flap valve. The error occurs when the valve seizes and the "motor" cannot rotate. Although I don't know, I think it is this lack of movement of the servo that is detected. By fitting this metal "cam" I believe the servo will see this as the resistance of the flap valve. This will only defeat the fuelling restrictions at the MOT revs for noise and emissions, it will not be a substitute for a proper re map. Andy
I had mine deactivated on the ecu by ChrisW. Makes it slightly louder at tick over etc, but other than that thats it.
The bike I've purchased has had a remap from cjs already with an Akra and the stock cat in place, from what I can tell the servo is still active as I can hear it whirring on start up but will take panels off today to double check. If it definitely is still in play that will give me an issue when I add a decat pipe as I'm going to take it over to JAC for him to look at fabricating one, the exhaust is slightly too quiet for my taste with that stock cat there so it needs beefing up a bit IMO The CJS remap is very rich as yesterday I could smell it , as could my mate when he was behind me, plus the rather poor tank range would suggest how much extra fuel has been added. If that's the case I might get away with not having to get it remapped when I add the decat as it'll tend to lean out again I suspect. I'm well aware it will throw off the curve a touch and Chris has suggested I will definitely have to remap but he's offered me a deal non the less. i guess the only way to go is to get the decat made and go from there.
If its been to CJS then it may have been remapped with a different (decat) mid section? With it now running rich it would certainly fit that profile. Typically when you ditch the cat it will lean the bike out. As you said, if your now going to decat the bike it may just sort itself out. I assume yours is a pre 2013 ? With the 2013 model very little is gained with adjusting the fueling, most of the adjustment is in the spark map. Which is why fatducs on a 2013 yield little benefits.
Mines a 2012 so yes you're correct, perhaps it did have a decat on at some point and the chap took it off prior to selling but he didn't mention it and to be fair to him he left on £1000's worth of other stuff so it must have happened some time ago. it just smells a touch rich to me but its my first multi so I don't know what additional fuel needs to be added to get it smoothed out. What I do know is that I had an absolute blast on it yesterday and rode it like a big supermoto, filled the tank up at one point and reset the mileage, it showed 222miles range at the time of filling and after another 95 it's saying I only have 50 left (145 total) now ok I did give it some welly at times but also did some longish stints on the A1 so would've thought it'd be better than it was mpg wise (not that I've ever chase mpg) i think its looking like it being too rich but I may well be wrong as I don't own a dyno
Well I think I may have mistaken the whirring sound for something else (fuel pump perhaps) i dont think the the servo is working therefore can only assume that the CJS remap has disabled it as I have no error on the dash? ive had the exhaust off and cycled the ignition on and off, I've also revved the engine whilst in neutral and nothing moves down there, no rotation, no cable movement, nothing. heres a picture of it parked in the position that it doesn't seem to move from, can anybody shed light as to whether that's fully open and therefore all good? (Apart from the rust which is now treated with ACF 50)
If when you turn the ignition on the valve is not operated and you do not get an error message on the dash, chances are CJS have disabled it . CJS should keep records of what they have done to bikes through their workshop so a phone call should confirm it. Andy
Recently installed a Leo Vince decat and can and intend to have a CJS remap sometime in the spring. The Leo Vince kit provides a little bit of metal which replaces the gear wheel on the exhaust valve. This fools the system to prevent the error message. All the metal bit does is rotate and hit against a stop so fooling the ECU into thinking its still activating the exhaust valve which similarly rotates and hits against a stop. I've also been in contact with Chris at CJS regarding fitting the metal bit. He said I needn't bother fitting it as he deactivates the exhaust valve motor when he does the remap. However, rather than put up with the error messages I fitted the metal bit anyway which turned out to be a lot easier than I thought it would be.
Take the silencer off and look down the pipe. Is the butterfly open or shut? does it move at switch on? If its been remapped it should be open and stay that way (I think). In standard form it will move and then go shut, only opening at higher revs, hence the Ducati "bark" at about 5.5 - 6k revs. Bit like the Vulcan Howl
