1098 r bayliss opinions please

  1. I just wonder, as its a wheelie monster to start, if bringing the rev range lower is a positive or negative thing on the road. Not that I've ridden one. Enjoy :upyeah:
     
  2. You can add 1t on the rear to take some sharp end off . Depending on the exhaust ( akra ? Termi? ) a good mapping should take away quit a bit of those issues ..

  4. If you've got the chance to buy one, do it. I'd have one over an 899 or 1199 any day. True big fast midrangey twin. Probably the best in my opinion.

  6. Can someone enlighten me the difference between the base or red 1098r and the Bayliss edition besides the obvious eg fairing, plaque..
     
  7. The question is what is the difference between the 2008 homologation 1098R vs 2009+ 1098R (includes Bayliss).

    The Ecus have a different part number, which may suggest a different TC. But the differences are otherwise evidenced by the Ducati Performance Accessories. The 70mm full system changed by moving the spring clip holders from the inside (2008) to the outside (2009+). But this applies to all 1x98 and they are compatible regardless of the year. Later Termis adopted the slash cut end cans. I think later full systems also had lambda ports on each header, but I could be mistaken. Otherwise they are the same.

    oh, and several 2008 1098Rs were pre-registered by Ducati at the factory for homologation purposes with a letter thanking the owner!

  8. Gents I'm finally pulling the trigger on this dream machine.. It's bike no 103/500 and was advertised in auto trader uk.. The bike was imported by a local bikeshop.. I just paid a small deposit this afternoon. If anyone in here knows the bike or is the previous owner, pls PM me.. I would love to know the history before making the full payment. Btw, can I swap the cans with the slashed version? The ducati website shows application only for 1198s model. Also, where can I source for track fairings? Cheers

  11. Later r has dtc v 2.0 .. Much and much better as it is said to take lean into account .. If im not mistaken w..
     
  12. Aaaand.... The 2008 1098R has a slightly marzipan transmision. It was prone to problems/failure if doing trackwork. The 2009 1098R had a beefed up transmision. I've got a 2008 1098R but its got the later, more robust transmision because mine is a track toy. And a bloody wonderful one at that I must say.

  15. What were the mechanical differences in the 2009 gearbox over the 2008 that made it stronger?

  17. Dunno. I think the 2008 1098R used the same trany as the 1098S but problems were encountered because of the power hike. Road use was ok but if you gave it heaps of track work the trany would fail. It was beefed up for 09/Bayliss rep. That's my understanding anyhow. I might be talking bollocks. And that's been known.
    Check it out on tinterpipe or with some Ducati smart arse/dealer type.
     
  18. I think the difference for the slash cut termi's will be the spring locations at a guess? I thought the 1198/848evo had the newer style spring mounts down the inside. Didn't the Bayliss come with fancy Akrapovic made titanium silencers or was that the standard 08 'r'?
     
  19. So I checked it out with a 'Ducati smart arse/dealer type' who had stripped and rebuilt many 1098R/1198 gearboxes, and indeed there are absolutely no differences between the 2008 and 2009 gearboxes.

    Just another tinternet myth... probably born out of riders who got carried away with the 1098R power when it was first released (ie, 2008) and decided to hammer the box with little/no sympathy.

    The only difference is found on the 1098S which had a different set of ratios compared to the 1098R (and 1198).
     
  20. Eeeeh, the lying fuckers! And there was me razzing round race tracks thinking I had a superior and probably indestructable trany....
    You may well be right and I'm sure you are more clued up on this type of stuff than me. But this has got me all curious now and I will drill a little deeper with inquiries.
    Perhaps they are physically the same to strip and rebuild but have a different composition and heat treatment. Just a thought. Or maybe I'm talking shite again.
